This is shortest report from my southern French report series. It is devoted to the one place in the town of Montpellier called Antigone.
Our plan was to arrive to Montpellier in the evening, to have a few hours walk, to spend a night in this town, to have few more hours walk in the Montpellier and then go to Nimes. I don't knew nothing about Montpellier and planing the trip gave to this town the lowest priority.
But plane was too late and we were forced even this short stay in Montpellier to cut. But arriving late in the evening and going from airport to the hotel I observed that the center of Montpellier is full of new and rather interesting examples of modern architecture. We were able to visit only one part of the center - about 1 km long street called Antigone.
And here are some photos from this area:
Antigone is clearly new street. All buildings are relatively new but the main concept designing this area was to mimic the Greek town. For the first time I saw so fully realized modern copy of Greek town. At one end of Antigone is located the Mediateque of Federico Fellini:
Antigone itself is an alley from both sides of which are located carefully designed classic style buildings. Entrance to the Antigone:
Late in the evening the alley was empty and very spacey so we were surprised finding in the morning actively functioning market:
Market made it difficult to do photos and I was not happy about it. Houses near the regularly spaced circle squares:
Regularly spaced fountains with the sculptures of Greek gods. This is Poseidon:
Lively shopping street:
The street is regularly interrupted by the buildings similar to the arcs:
The buildings near the Antigone from back side: it was easier to photograph them from that side:
Going further begins the area of Montpellier called L'Esplanade de l'Europe. Returning back to the other side of Antigone begins the area called Polygone:
Unfortunatelly I don't had more time to explore Montpellier and only could recommend one Montpellier gallery which I found with the help of Google:
