Kalniečiai - my home district

Jul 15, 2011 17:41

Probably hot summer weather somehow affected me since I decided to show my home district in Kaunas: rather typical commieblock district from the second part of 1970s and the first part of 1980s :))) Anyway I live here :)

Clean and neat appearance. But the children swings made of concrete look unusual.

These days the number of those concrete swings are much smaller :) This district formed the style of children equipment for a decade :)

Very nice to see still unrenovated blocks: construction quality is clearly better than here, in Belarus. Also I liked Kalnieсiai 3 layout (bird's eye photo), those long narrow yards looked very unusual for me.

These yards are the really interesting thing. Only from the ground is quite difficult to feel them.

Very interesting and instructive indeed. The same may well be said about your journal.

May I ask - out of sheer curiosity - why you have chosen to write in English?

Unfortunately I have been to Kaunas just twice, each time very briefly. Still there are at least two sites I definitely want to explore: they are the Mickevičius Museum and Žaliakalnis area. I believe Kalniečiai belongs to Žaliakalnio seniūnija. (I wonder if the name of your district derives from those kalniečiai who used to live on Žaliakalnis). The reason I want to see Žaliakalnis is a painting Žaliakalnis žiemą dating back to 1939 by Mstislavas Dobužinskis which I like very much and am linked to by quite a long story: a copy of the painting was in the living room of my very dear late friend in Vilnius. I wonder what Žaliakalnis looks like today.

Thanks for very interesting comments. The last photo is from the place were I was born :) (It's not seen on the photo but is very close to the right side :))

Kalniečiai belong to the Eiguliu seniūnija just to the north from the Žaliakalnio seniūnija. It's name derives from the Kalnėnai village which was earlier at the place were the district is built. It's name clearly means that it's someone who lives on the hill.

I wanted to try to do blog oriented to the outside audiences I decided that English will be best choice in this case. Also it is quite difficult to me to write using Cyrillic letters (it's the main reason why I refused to do Russian blog :))

A great many thanks for inforamtion and clarifications. In a sense, as it were, you are Žalios Kalvos Kalnietis. :)

I do hope I will have a chance to do a good sightseeing of the hills you come from.

All the very best to you once again!
