Alytus - to both sides from the center

Dec 07, 2010 17:43

Today let's come back again to the Alytus and let make short walks to both sides from the center:

Last time I stopped at the outskirts of the central square. First I went some way western direction - the direction which leads to the main soviet period residential districts. The way goes through the Jotvingių street - the main administrative street in this not big town. In the photo above it is shown local tax inspection office. On the other side of the street another examples of administrative buildings. Most of them are the product of 1970s-1980s or early 1990s but were reconstructed/ renovated in recent years. The results of such "processing" are not simple and are difficult to judge ...

Alytus police office:

Alytus branch of state social security foundation:

Several modern commercial buildings.

Electronics shop: Alytus style:

Simply awful bank building. It is difficult to date such "masterpiece":

If you will go further westwards soon you will reach residential districts. As the entrance to them serves probably biggest commercial modern commercial building in this town - "Skirnuva" business center (2005):

But at this place I turned back and using sidestreets went to the other side from the central square. Those streets should also be treated as the center of the town so here you can find many commercial buildings intermixed with the residential ones.

In those streets there are several residential buildings from the 1980s which were built using individual projects (downtown anyway:))). They quite a good reflects the ideas in the construction of that period:

Decorative sculpture from that period I guess:

One of the faculties of Alytus college - probably product of the same period (or may be 1990s):

Several modern buildings as those two bank buildings:

Several pre-WWII buildings. Just one for example:

Going further eastwards we are leaving center and the buildings becoming "smaller". There are older and newer of them. But only in Alytus I saw such phenomena as the tables with the construction year on any older building. This is probably the phenomena of the town which grown up recently and don't inherited a lot from the past periods.

An example of such building:

It's closest neighbor - representative of entirely different period :))

Further street goes down to the river:

Near the river you can find restored street with old paving - another desperate attempt to save those few remains of heritage:

From older buildings here I found only former Jewish synagogue. For a long time it was used as a depot. Last August I found the infotable nearby stating that Alytus municipality is ready to move this building from category  "industrial - logistic buildings" to the category "cultural-educational-religious buildings" (it is formal according to laws requirement to announce publicly the intention to change the purpose of the building and to wait for some time if someone will not protest the change of the purpose):

How this formality is done in practice :)))

Also nearby I found the awful building of the branch of state security department. The building itself was covered with awful grafitties most of the aren't seen in photo :))  Camouflage or democracy :)))

But the bigger part of Alytus looks like in this photo. It may sound unbelievable but I will prepare the report about those districts in the future also :))
