Hong Kong Travelblogue, episode two

Mar 28, 2009 14:56

Moving right along in my description of my surroundings, I want to introduce you to the view that I have from my balcony.

To start, here is the view of the skyline:

And here is a closeup of the tallest building:

Looking straight down from my balcony, there is a small park with a few trees and a swing set directly behind the the building. There are often children playing there at night and I usually see an old Chinese guy in a white t-shirt doing his exercises there when I look down in the morning (he's standing next to the swing set in the middle of the picture):

Here is a closeup shot of one of the older apartment buildings that I can see. There are many, many buildings like this in Hong Kong:

...And here is a view of one of the newer buildings. One thing that I find striking about Hong Kong in comparison to New York is that many of the buildings appear very skinny. In New York the older, thinner buildings like brownstones and tenements are packed together in blocks and most of the taller buildings have larger footprints, but here there are many tall, thin apartment buildings in the residential areas.

Here is a zoomed view of a large clock that sits on the ground on the other side of a park that has many basketball courts in it. The park is surrounded by a fence and has about six or eight courts which see heavy use on the weekends. Interestingly enough, it is about two blocks away from the intersection of Lockhart and Luang roads in Wan Chai, which is basically strip club central and crawling with prostitutes. I somehow think that this wouldn't be allowed in the states.

Anyway, that's it for this exciting episode, stay tuned for my pictures of the Green Power 25k hike and the Shek-O beach town.
