Went to the assisted living place today to drop off Dad's depends (adult diapers), and had a bit of a chat with the administrator and resident coordinator. Seems they want to move my Dad into the Special Care unit (which is the nice term for the "Alzheimer's wing").
Apparently, not only did he call me in the middle of the night last week, he also called 911. When the police arrived, he said he was fine, just wanted to know where he was. His dementia has become noticeably worse all of a sudden. The staff said this isn't uncommon, and they are being proactive (he also tried to get out of the place in the middle of the night).
At least this explains some of our conversations - his rants about them "tossing him out of his apartment" and "moving to another facility" actually make sense now. There always seems to be a grain of truth underneath what he tells me; he just embellishes things in a strange way so I can't follow what he's trying to communicate to me. He's also losing some of his language skills - he has trouble with finding the right words for things, which makes it harder.
I'm trying to keep a stiff upper lip about the whole thing, and the staff are very compassionate to both my Dad *and* me. It's a good facility, and I'm glad Dad can afford to be there.
