Just got back from a showing of the movie Serenity... I must say, probably the most entertaining movie I've seen in a long time. ^_^
My friend Chris recommended the TV series on DVD last week and so I picked it up from my local Fry's and gave it a whirl. It started out kinda slow, but it was an interesting idea(and very similar to my own comic series Last Shot though with a far more western take and far more humor/relationships)... The show picked up though and the characters grew on me fast. I ended up finishing the series in two nights of hardcore watching. By the end of it all, I wish it had continued. At first glance, I can see why the series fell through the cracks, the cast isn't exactly your "attractive" bunch of folk. But on closer inspection, they are all good actors and very likeable people. It's a rare thing for a show to have characters with such good chemistry. It also had a very fun episodic pacing with intriguing plotlines and character development.
Anywho, so I came into the movie with some expectations and they were met very well. I must say, I didn't expect a couple of things to happen which I won't spoil here. It's a fun movie and I highly recommend it. I'd also recommend watching the series before you go see it(though it's not necessary) because the movie pretty much takes off from where the series left off.
I guess why this series struck a chord with me is because it reminds me of the things a creator goes through. When you come up with a good idea, story, characters and you believe in the work ... sometimes that vision is dismissed and pushed to the wayside by forces that you cannot control. Firefly was a really great show and it fell off the air because of network execs that failed to see the appeal of it. Though, because the fans kept the series alive by their purchases of the dvd set, they had a movie made which allowed the creator to revisit his creations once again. To me, that is something to be admired.
