I got carried away by the Democratic Convention. Although I haven't heard all the speeches yet, I stayed up last night to see Hillary accept the nomination.
My son (first time Bernie primary voter--woot!) and I have been texting about the election, specifically about role models, and whether politicians should have that in their job description. He is a right little cynic at this point, and states that he prefers fictional role models. Because they won't let you down? Because they are a known quantity (at least if the book/movie/comic/anime is finished)? We're still hashing that out.
Hillary, if nothing else, is one tough broad. And she gets things done. I think in my life right now I could use some of that role model for myself.
And I was pleased by her pick for VP. Kaine seems a thoroughly nice guy, in all the right ways, adorkable with a steel spine. The Twitter meme that started with him as a Dorky Dad is funny as heck:
Tim Kaine is America's Dorky Dad John Scalzi put up his Hillary
thoughts, pretty even-handed, and he added to the fun:
"Maybe ultimately the issue is that she’s not likable, i.e., she’s not the candidate you’ll have a beer with. Well, now there’s Tim Kaine for that if that’s important to you; he’ll have a beer with you, and if you have too many he’ll take your keys when you’re not looking, pretend to help you look for them when you’re ready to go, and then let you sleep it off on the couch."
Listening to Chelsea talk about her mother affected me profoundly. I read Good Night Moon over and over to my younger son, reciting it from memory to him in the hospital overnight when he almost died from a severe allergic reaction to antibiotics. I learned All About Dinosaurs from my elder son, who would line small plastic models up in precise rows all round the edge of the coffee table, naming and explaining as he worked. I played the cloud picture game on the long drives to WV with both boys--making the trip so often so they could know and interact with their grandparents.
For all that I say that I like boring, technocratic politicians who do their work competently, and that personal emotions shouldn't play into it--I felt a connection. And what can I say?
I'm With Her.
