For those who might be coming early or staying late for VividCon, The Field Museum is hosting the Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs exhibit. If anyone is interested in going, we could organize a field trip. Heh - get it? Field!

*cough*

Yes.

Thanks for the tip!

Yeah, I'm a 'hardcore tourist'. {g} Puts a new spin on "Florida tourist... in Chicago". I like wandering and absorbing in stuff ASAP, which has caused some, err, problems in my getting lost from groups. {blush} Reminiscent of Sam in the CLex fic, "Family, Friendship, and Love", I'm working on a 'battle plan'.

I'm thinking Museum of Science, Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, and Adler Planetarium. May switch the order between Shedd and Adler because of the jazz thing.

I've been to Shedd and Adler once before during the first Vividcon... Hm, I think that may have been my last visit to Chicago. As much as I like astronomy, Adler was kinda dull, if memory is correct (willing to give it a second try), but I loved Shedd and the waterside kinda reminded me of being home (Florida beaches galore here), so I'll probably divide more time at Shedd. Last time, I didn't plan it right and missed Field Museum.

Depending on the time...

Then go past Millennium Park, head towards Navy Pier, and maybe try Hancock Observatory (speck out the shopping "mile" - too poor, so it'd be more like 'window shopping') as a quickie before hoping to make the last transit. I have to keep times of transportation in mind too.

So, August 10th has me up by 3am (full work day on Aug 9th) for the airport shuttle, on a flight leaving Tampa at 6:30a to arrive in Chicago by 8:15a and I'll probably not see my roommate back at the hotel until after 10pm. It's going to be a long day. :-\ Sunday may be almost as long since I'm taking a redeye back to Tampa for an ETA of past midnight (figure in at least another hour for the shuttle and I won't be home until past 1:30-2am) and working Monday morning. Friday and Saturday are all for the convention, so they're my 'downtime'. :-)

Oh, when I said, "Oriental Museum too and Lincoln Park/Zoo", I was referencing Sunday. I probably should stay to learn from the vid review panels but I'd also like to check out these places. Special effects also sounds like an interesting one but most places close up by 5-6pm.

With the schedule up now, I can get a better estimate for Sunday.

Just a suggestion - the Oriental Museum and the Museum of Science and Industry are both down in Hyde Park, right by the University of Chicago (in fact the Oriental is *part of* the University), whereas Lincoln Park Zoo is way the hell north of that, so maybe plan your days according to location. :)

Thanks!

Yeah, as the typical tourist, I bought at least a couple Chicago maps at O'Hare years ago. {g} I should've revised it to read 'or', instead of 'and'. I'd like to see Sunday's special effects panel at 2pm but may decide to skip out on it, if I'm to resume 'getting lost' around noon because I have to be back at the hotel before 7pm to make the 8'ish pm flight.

I'm at work now but I had written hours of operation for the sites and it's going to be a tight fit. Dunno when I'll make it out to Chicago again.

Again I say, "wow!"

I don't know if this will affect your schedule, but the Science and Industry and the Oriental Institute are very near each other. You could hit them both in one trip.

I'd say 'wow' to your Clark icon. :-) Guh, too pretty and now he's extra cuddly with the additional fat padding. :-D {looks a bit closer at icon and notices how dirty the Mac screen at work is *wipewipe*}

Aye, they're very close but I'm left wondering about time. Would've been nice to have an extra day but my work situation is another matter as I'm the only office worker, busy time (I'm working evenings and some weekends), and my boss is out in Europe now... I feel kinda embarrassed I didn't have enough time to really get a *better* vid together for VVC's Premieres. At least I can go back and revise it for later releases, and if it does get feedback, I can correct the mistakes... Well, the added grain and blanched color (an antique feel for color/texture effect - cliched LJ icon theme) were suppose to be intentional considering I started out with clear and bright color footage ripped from a DVD. Hehe, five hour render on footage folk will probably think I started off with bad source.

Back to time, I'm debating the Oriental Museum on Thursday but I'd like at least 45-60 minutes (fast walker and cameras can get snapshots for later review) for each site. If it's properly planned and timed with transportation, it's possible to fit much into a day.

Adler is up in the air (no pun) but it's also part of the Museum Campus with Shedd and Field very nearby. I remember, back in 2002 (found the old brochures), being bored because the exhibits weren't really interesting and the shows--granted, I was amused with the 'play with your dots' via seat consoles while waiting)--were... err. :-\ Astronomy is beautiful and fascinating but Adler seemed too 'family' orientated and kept to the basics and very little theorizing. Been four years and things could've significantly changed.

Even arriving in Chicago at ~8:15a, hotel shuttles take more time--wonder if I can call them on my cell as I exit the plane, instead of calling at a courtesy booth, because I'll just have the carry-on--and I'll need some time to 'freshen up/unwind' after nearly six hours of airport/airplane (one hour timezone difference). Wait, "free" (provided you paid for a stay) continental breakfast at SpringHill Suites? Some food, possibly. {g} I'm estimating leaving the hotel appx. 9:30a at the *latest* and then 30-40 minutes getting lost in transit to downtown. ;-) And these places close at 5-6pm (Adler closes later). Eight hours to hit 4-5 sites. The 'second half' of the tourism is for stuff that will probably be open past 6pm and going into 8pm (open parks, stores, and restaurants).

If I can get Oriental (no pun on my being Oriental) on Thursday, I could do Lincoln Park/Zoo Sunday afternoon and be back at the hotel by 6-7pm for a flight that leaves at ~8:45p. Hmm, decisions.

Speaking of 'wow', that was a long-winded post. {g}

Back to 'world domination' via an L-shaped receptionist desk at work.
