Reading Status Anxiety, the author's ideas largely mirror my own on the topic.

But it's a lot of fun to read someone who says something you already believe in a very convincing and erudite way. This passage also explains why I think people in the CIS are largely unhappy as compared to the USSR days (even those who are doing materially ok):

Saw two movies recently - Greenberg and Heartbraker. What's interesting is that the main character in Greenberg is 40 - and is acting like his life is pretty much over. He's blown a chance to sign a record label 15 years ago, has recently checked out of a mental institution and is resigned to watch his friends get old and raise their children ( Read more... )

I didn't give up a seat to some 40ish woman on the tube today. It was very packed, someone vacated the seat and I was closer. She gave me a недовольный and sarcastic 'cheers' as if it's my obligation to let her take it. I don't think so. I give up seats for ( Read more... )
