I came up with the idea when I viewed this on one of my favorite blogs! Anyways, this is what I made:
(Right-click "view image" to see it full size!)
It's a map of the USA. The flags are from various countries. Each pair [state and foreign flag] have the same area! It turns out that Rhode Island and The Cape Verde Islands only have a 12 square mile differance in area!!! It's that cool? Yes, I know I'm a Geo-geek... but that's what you get when you move so much and pay attention to the world news!
I find is extremely fascinating that so many countries that are on the population map are on the area map. About half of them are on both. Since there's around 160 countries (yes, there are more, but only if you count countries/territories under another nations' control,) that many wouldn't show up randomly, so there must be something else going on. I vote that it has something to do with the maximum number of humans you can cram into a small space (AKA, population density!)
Of all of the flag-state combonations, only one had to be modified. Idaho is TALL!!! (The other colors didn't show on the edges if I kept the correct ratio.) I also did the great lakes (treating Michigan and Huron separately) and then put them in faded, so that it's hopefully not confusing!
One other thing worth mentioning - Some of the states would have been closer to a different country (e.g. Pennsylvania would have better match Malawi.) However, there is a "lack" of "middle-sized-state-size" countries! There are eight states in the 50,000 square miles range, but only four countries. To compensate for this, and to reduce horrible "matches" later down the line (I only wanted to use each country once,) I "bumped" Ohio two countries lower on the list than it would have been if it was just a one-on-one match. I had all the next states follow right behind matching each to a country, allowing them to be fairly close to the right number. Overall, each match is off by only an average of 2,781 square miles, or about half the size of the third smallest state, Connecticut; it's smaller than New York City! Not too shabby!
I will not say how long I spent making the map due to the fact that I should have spent the time writing papers for English II, for it doesn't matter how much time I spent on it! However, I will say that it took 12 steps to make each state-shaped flag; plus, then I had to arrange them into a USA shape!
But, come on, it's it wicked cool? I'm going to email it to the person who runs Strange Maps, and I hope it will be posted! That would be soooo cool!!!
Anyways, let me know what you think?
Also, just for fun, I'm not posting the list of what state goes with which country! *Evil laughter and world domination*
However, this is a fantastic site:
www.flags.net/search.php You can enter info about the flag and it will show the possibilities! I did it for all the flags on the above link to Strange Maps, and it didn't take me that long (albeit, I knew around half already...)
Oh, and works cited:
