They Did What, Indeed

Gotham's final season is stumbling to an end, with its final, timeskipping-ahead episode, playing next week. This week's episode, "They Did What?," wasn't great but it's been better than the last few before it. Looking at AO3's recent fic, many viewers weren't happy with how "They Did What?" handled Penguin and the Riddler's relationship, but I didn't mind so much, mostly becase the show has seriously lowered my expectations of that ever going the way I wanted it to, the way the show and publicity suggested it would before going strongly and repeatedly "no homo" about it. It probably helps that I'm an older fan and accustomed to not having textual canon supports for my 'ships and that I'd already dismissed Gotham's writers as queerbaiting trash a year ago... and that this season has been so bad. (And that Penguin's been so badly nerfed throughout it.) So I can take Penguin throwing himself over the Riddler to protect him from a grenade and losing an eye over it and the hug and "brother"ly partnership, with each of them choosing not to knife the other (something that happened very differently with Lee and the Riddler last season), and be nearly content. For now. Because the writers still have one episode left to screw everything up in.

Due to that, I have very low expectations for the final episode, and I'll be surprised if it isn't a dumpster fire.
