An interesting tidbit for those of you who have read Tanya Huff's Four Quarters series: I was given a map of Albania in my linguistics class and was surprised to immediately recognize several place names. As it turns out, Huff took most of her place names from cities in the Balkan region. Shkoder and Elbasan are cities in Albania; Ohrid is in Macedonia; Vidor is in Italy; and several other names, like Sibiu and Adjud, I found in Romania. For those unfamiliar, the main country in the Four Quarters series is Shkoder, capitol Elbasan, major city Vidor, border mountain pass at Ohrid, smaller cities as named. The country portrayed as antagonistic, however, is the only name I've looked for thus far that Huff invented whole-cloth.
