Everyone around Richard suddenly keeps asking him, why should they trust or obey Jacob when they haven't seen him?
He doesn't understand why they go to him, because they know that he'll always remain loyal to Jacob. That if they go to him, he will give an answer according to what he thinks will be best for the island, just like Jacob would.
So when they accost him and say, "Help me make up my mind," he can only shake his head and say, "But wouldn't that save you?"
And he leaves them in the dark, for whoever questions Jacob's motives and existence doesn't deserve a real answer.
