Beautiful Lie
Ben notices her obvious fear among the calm people aboard.
Her fear is not unwarranted.
He sits next to her, places his hand over hers. She jumps slightly, and he says she'll be all right. She nods, relaxes in her seat.
Eventually, the plane starts shaking and oxygen masks fall and he sees black before he can see her disappear.
Ben lives on the island where the plane crashes, never finds the woman. He smiles. Her fear was not unwarranted, but fear does not survive here, either, and he is alive because she was there as the necessary sacrifice.
His fake reassurance was merely an act of gratitude.
