Ben's never killed a man before, and he doesn't plan on changing that anytime soon. Having fingers clasped around a gun's trigger so tightly that they bleed, that's not him. He never wants that to be him.
And this is just one reason why Ben rescues the Hostile without knowing the full story behind his presence. He doesn't want to watch the man die at the hands of his people.
But the Hostile doesn't believe in Ben's innocence; he shoots the boy quickly. He cries, but not for the child.
Later, Ben wakes up, and he's still never killed a man before.
He wonders why he hasn't yet.
