This Week in Caroline

Every year I watch the State of the Union address because I feel it's my civic duty, kind of like voting. And then, every year, I'm like "God, why did I bother?"

I happened to be at work on Monday, so I had the TV in the office on. One of the residents (the one that the other women say is a crackhead) kept coming in to ask me what was going to be on that night.

"It's a presidential debate, right? Between Obama and who?"

"Actually, it's the State of the Union address."

"Oh, okay!"

Five minutes later: "When's the debate coming on?"

I began to think that there might be some truth to this crackhead theory.

Anyway, about half way through the speech, I have to admit I was getting bored. I had begun to critique the president's wardrobe: "Bush is not showing enough pocket square." One of the (non-crackhead) residents came in to the office.

"Come have some cake with us!"

"Oh, no. That's okay..."

"No, come on! She just baked it..."

So I spent the next half hour eating cake and ice cream and laughing with the women in the shelter, which I really think was a better use of my time.

About 4:00 AM that night, I got a phone call.

"Ross County Coalition!"

"Yeah, we were wondering if you wanted us to check Socioto Trails tonight too?

"I have no idea what you're talking about."

"We're doing the annual homeless count..."

"Oh! I'm afraid I don't know anything about-"

And then the stupid cord came out of the crappy office phone and cut us off. I started freaking out, afraid that something would go horribly wrong with the homeless count, we'd lose all of our funding, and it would ALL BE MY FAULT.

Fortunately, there was a big article on the front page of the Gazette today, along with photos of my boss (Desaad), about how the annual homeless count went smoothly. I didn't screw anything up! GO ME!
