So, ten and a bit years ago my extension english one teacher introduced myself, and my other classmates to a book called A History of Reading by Alberto Manguel and in case you haven't realised this yet it became one of my favourite books ever.
One of the chapters in it deals with the kind of furniture used by readers over the time. Sitting at desks, reclining on beds/lounges, odd looking desk/chair combinations. Like just about everything else in the book it was interesting to me. :) Of course I sit strangely to read anyway... my common position lately has been sitting on a chair with my legs tucked up in front of me.
Something like this:
only whilst on a chair...
I've been thinking about what I read in that chapter a bit lately. Alex and I are slowly growing our library area... and will probably soon need some new bookshelves (and then of course more books to fill them)... but we've got no particular furniture for the library area. We were thinking of getting something like a chesterfield lounge or chairs for the library area... but I'm not convinced I'd be comfortable sitting in my "reading position" in one...
We've got plenty of time to make our minds up anyway... but well, I'm curious... how do other people position themselves to read in this day and age? Is there a perfect piece of furniture for reading in that you own? Or a perfect place? And what makes it perfect anyway?
