So I've been working on compiling my family tree for um... more than 15 years now... and have suffered through multiple versions (both as I've tried to tidy up my records, changes of operating systems and software, and to keep various family members happy)...
But I've finally started to put everything back into a single file and doing data entry to get everything into said single file. And I've just passed 1000 individuals*. This is most of my mother's side of the family, as well as a fair portion of my father's ... although I still have quite a bit more of the latter to put in.
Of course, even once I get stuck with names and can't go any further forwards or backwards there's still more to be done. I've been having fun looking people up in the British censuses or tracking down families that people have married into (one Howe married a descendant of first and second fleet convicts (there were no women in the first fleet)) - or tracking down newspaper articles including death and funeral notices but other things too (like the relative whose death was manslaughter because she was hit by a car). Oh and at some point I'm going to have to take myself off to Rookwood. Turns out some of the Howe-s were buried in the first Anglican part of the cemetery... I'd love to go see those grave-stones (as morbid as that sounds).
I don't know if I'll ever be done with this hobby... but you know I don't mind... it's fun that there's all these facets to it. Now if only the data entry part wasn't taking so long.
* 1000 individuals is quite a lot... although I recently came across someone with 32,000 individuals. However every time I try to load his file in it's entirety the website crashes... so I don't actually know how my family links into his at all :P
