"eek"

I was opening the garage door yesterday when I saw a mouse come around the corner of the house heading for the garage. It turned and ran back to the front porch and hid between the overhang on the front step and our welcome mat. I blocked its escape route at one end and grabbed the little fishy net we had from the previous owners (to use for the old, crappy pond we got rid of). I slowly pulled the mat out until I could see where the mouse was and then held the net down to catch it when it tried to escape. Then I scooted the mat a little toward the net until the mouse ran. It ran right into the net. I quickly lifted up the net, quite proud of myself to see the mouse. As I did, the mouse quickly scrabbled up the netting and jumped out from about 6 feet high, flying through the air toward the front porch. I realized with mild shock that I had not closed the garage door and sure enough the little rodent made a bee-line for the garage. I have no idea if he's still in there or not, but it bugs the crap out of me. I think we need to get a kid-friendly mousetrap to catch him. Serves me right for trying to catch him instead of just smashing him -- I could've just wedged a shovel blade between the mat and the stoop and probably cut him in half. Oh, well.
