Last night I didn't get to sleep for hours after I read the latest ghost stories thread on
SA Of course it was one of those pea soup foggy days on campus to freak me out further. I only have had one experience.
Two years ago I was staying at the Hotel Gunther at Failinger's on main street in Frostburg with my mom. We came up here to look at the town and the University to decide if I wanted to attend school here (it might be in the boonies but I have small class sizes, the people are really nice in general and the mountains are gorgeous and almost pristine). The hotel is really very old, it was a jail originally used to hold prisoners overnight when they had to bring them along the old toll road. At one time it was also a speakeasy during the dry days of prohibition. Now it's mainly apartments with a handful of rooms left to serve as hotel rooms.
The hotel website with pictures and history When you enter the from the front there is a huge beautiful double staircase, in the sides of the center of that staircase are the steps to the basement (where the speakeasy and the prisoners were once held). The place is kind of like a freaky little museum of sorts with not just stuffed dead animals killed locally but albino stuffed dead animals killed locally. There are also a few antiques, garden gnomes and a display "jail cell" with the single worst dummy I've ever seen (it looks like a hobo, but the place served as a jail far before the days of the railroad). The whole thing reminded me slightly of a David Lynch flick.
The hotel was basically empty except for the manager up at the desk, my mom and I were the only guests. I hadn't run into any of the permanent residents. My mom and I were down in the museum and she was lingering too long by the carcasses for me, so I walked off to a different section. I walked maybe 20 yards from where she was towards the closed down sports bar. I was reading something on the wall when I heard footsteps about five feet to my right which stopped parallel to me. I turned making some comment to my mom about the great cheesiness of the place when I saw there was no one there. I booked it out of there with goosebumps from head to toe.
My mom didn't hear anything and I was too worried about sounding crazy to say something to the manager about it. If anyplace is haunted it's probably that place with it's history though. Not the most thrilling tale, but it's mine and it's true :)
