Friday night was rather depressing. There's a building near the mouth of the river called the Spanish Arch. It was built in the 1400's or something to protect the traders from Spain. There was a vigil there for all the victims of the Madrid bombing. There were about 2000 people there and lots of them had candles and we had a 5 minute silence at 7pm. It was quite powerful, it was even more powerful since we had someone from the Madrid office up for training and she obviously had a tough time with everything.
Today at work we had 3 minutes of silence at 11 in honor of the victims. To have a bustling call center brought to complete silence was just plain eerie.
This whole bombing thing has really shook up the people here. I think it's because when they hear about stuff like this in the news it's real far away (Israel, Russia, USA) and never in their own back yards.
And that is the most fucked up thing about this whole mess. It's one thing if it's a military group and they are going after military targets. But these scum are targeting ordinary people who are just trying to go about their lives minding their own fucking business. Why did someone on their way to work, with a husband/wife and kids have to die that morning? Because your Basque group wants independence? Because you think your god is better than 'ours'? Because Spain has 1300 troops in Iraq? Does that mean you should go out and slaughter people who are no threat to you?
How does this cycle stop? Do you roll over and let them have their way? Then whenever you do something they dont agree with they can bomb another train station, or crash a plane into a building?
Do you go and send troops to kill them only to have another generation hating you for killing their daddies?
Who knows what the answer is. It is probably making groups so afraid of the consequences they wouldnt even think about it. Which is really tough for people who think they are gonna go to heaven and be serviced by Allah and 50 virgins. Nothing short of genocide would probably make that go away....
