Spoilerific Spiderman Reaction

May 14, 2007 16:06

I just saw Spiderman 3. And well, golly, I must say the special effects are great, the acting wasn't bad, the porn potential was enormous - and Venom… well let's just say as the Gate, I find a kind of kindred spirit in that entity. Evil black possessive tentacley critter who does some kick ass bondage? Who can say no to that?

COMPLETELY SPOILERY REACTION/PARODY AHOY! )

commentary, spiderman, rant

Geh, I was pretty disappointed in it. -_-

...If they don't do a fourth with Carnage, I might have to choke a bitch. X/

I'm still hoping for the comic-book law "No Dead Body, And He's Not Dead" law for Venom...

I think Venom is too cool to really get rid of. As for Sandman -- well he was really really dull, but they didn't get rid of him either. In fact I think that might have been because Raimi didn't know HOW to kill him -- the dude appears to be utterly invulnerable -- he can reform himself out of anything.

Yeah, when Sandman just up and evaporated, I was all, "...Well, that was nice of him..." Thank God for repentant badguys, or Spiderman's ass would be grass. XD

(I'm praying for Venom to return...He got, like, 30 minutes of screen time. X/)

Well, except that the sandman was sorry for killing Parker's Uncle -- not for all the incredible amounts of havoc and endangerment he did later. He doesn't oppologise for kidnapping and nearly killing MJ -- Or Spidey -- or really anything. And he doesn't so much evaporate as he flies away. That was a really anticlimactic wtf moment -- because dude, Spidey just let the guy go, no promises tendered.

But then Sandman appears to be entirely an afterthought. They needed a villian to tempt Spidey to become Venom, but they didn't actually really care to follow through with the whole "my daughter is dying I need money" arc.

Pretty much. It moved from "I'm sorry, but I need to save my dysfunctional family. I'm honestly a good person." to "RAWR IMZ KICKIN ASS JUST CUZ." to "Let's be vengeful and stuff together." and finally to "Whatever, gone with the wind, bitches."

I was confused.

But still happy that emo-Pete got to knock a bitch out. XD *MJ hate*

Well here's the thing -- I don't want to hate MJ. I really don't. I think it's awesome that Spiderman has a relationship with the girl next door. The problem is that the writers are just bound and determined to deny MJ any chance of being anything greater than a canon Sue.

Her emotional reactions make no sense. She is constantly being blown from one romantic liason to the next, to the point where it seems like she has will power of tissuepaper. She isn't given any clever lines. They even do her a greater disservice in this installment, because the one thing she had going for her -- her talent and beauty -- are utterly undermined.

I don't want to hate on MJ, Spiderman 3 manages to do an excellent job of that without me adding anything to it.

In this movie especially, I just found her to be a weak character in general. Not just in dialogue, but in the little development she had, she was a bitch.

"How dare you have more attention than me even though you're a superhero that saves the city on a regular basis and my voice can't carry past the first row? WHAT ABOUT MY NEEDS!? I won't tell you the truth for fear of putting you in a situation I know you could overcome, so there."

...Rawr. I don't think I can help the hate after that sort of plot advance.

Honestly, I can't think of another canon that hated on it's female lead this much. I wonder if Sam Raimi has a bit of yaoi fangirl in him.
