A First Kiss
The motel room is the last in the row, so it even has a window. The interior however is as generic, yellow-greenish as the rest of the rooms.
John thinks back to road trips he made at the end of the 80s when he rebelled against his father. It seems like another lifetime ago when this meant freedom. Now, it feels more like the opposite.
Or not the opposite. He doesn't feel captive so much as lost.
They've only been here for six weeks, but it feels like an eternity since they last stepped through the gate. It doesn't feel right to be back on Earth, but not really back. They're all in limbo, and everything feels unreal to him.
Things have changed since they came back. Ronon is with Amelia. Rodney isn't with Jennifer any longer. It should be a relief, but Rodney's been acting strangely since then, distancing himself. At least, that's how it feels to John.
It only adds to the overall feeling of disconnect.
When Ronon suggests the road trip, they all agree. John knows that Teyla misses her people and that it must be worse for Kanaan, even though they both are polite and patient.
A little distraction is good for all of them.
As they progress through California, John realizes that he hasn't seen much of Teyla's personal life. With Ronon, he can blame it on his relationship being new, but when he sees Teyla around Kanaan at breakfast or snuggling into his side at night, it's a bit of a revelation.
Ronon and Amelia are more like teenagers in love. Except for the alarming tendency to roughhouse. It takes John a few days not to fear for Amelia and to realize that she can hold her own easily.
If Rodney is bothered by the open display of "coupledom" around him, he doesn't show it. He alternates between rolling his eyes, eating, and busying himself with a book or his laptop, which he insisted on bringing along.
Sometimes he stays with John when the others are off doing couple things. They've watched TV in motel rooms or went to a park with Torren, giving Teyla and Kanaan some time for themselves.
But there's still something about Rodney that's worrying John. As if his mind is elsewhere. Sometimes he looks at John as if he wanted to ask him about it but then decides not to. John isn't sure he wants to know what it is. He doesn't think it's about getting back with Keller, but it's very hard to tell since Rodney hasn't really talked about the breakup.
The days go on. Soon, they'll have to return to Atlantis and hopefully the order that will allow them to go home. John places his bag in the motel room. He doesn't bother to unpack. They'll only stay one night. He wonders if he should go find Rodney. The question is answered when there's a knock on the door.
John lets Rodney in, and they stand like that for a moment. "Wanna watch TV or head out?" John asks.
"Stay in," Rodney says, sounding a bit nervous. John doesn't know why.
"Is there something on TV?" John asks.
Rodney just looks at him, not saying anything. John gets a weird feeling in his stomach.
"Or do you wanna watch DVDs on your laptop?" he asks.
Rodney remains silent, and John is ready to ask if he's still here when Rodney suddenly leans forward and kisses him right on the mouth.
John is too surprised to react for a moment, and Rodney pulls back.
"God. I'm so sorry. I knew I shouldn't have done that. There was no reason to believe that-"
John cuts him off with another kiss, wrapping his arms around Rodney and holding him so tight that Rodney probably has a hard time breathing. But instead of complaining, Rodney kisses him back with abandon, his arms folding around John just as tightly.
Eventually, they have to breathe, but John won't let Rodney move away too far, putting his hand on his neck and leaning his forehead against Rodney's.
"I can't believe it's really happening," Rodney whispers.
"That makes two of us," John says.
They kiss again, making their way to the bed with it's yellow pillows and green covers.
"It's not that I don't want to," Rodney says between kisses, "but can we not have sex for the first time in a motel room?"
John looks at him and smiles. "Yeah," he agrees. He's not sure he'll remember anything about this room other than how Rodney looked and felt, but he understands what Rodney is saying. This doesn't feel like part of their normal life, and while being with Rodney for the first time will be extraordinary, he very much wants it to be part of their ordinary life. "Making out though?" he asks hopefully.
"Oh, yes, please," Rodney answers, pushing them both onto the bed.
John cups his face and looks up at him. "Thank you," he says.
"For what?" Rodney asks, puzzled.
"For daring to try even though you didn't know how it would end," John says.
Rodney flushes, but he looks happy. "Well, I've been thinking about all of this a lot, and this seemed to be the obvious conclusion." There's just a hint of smugness in his voice.
John chooses not to remind him how he'd pulled back, sure that he'd been wrong just a few minutes ago. Rodney deserves to be smug about this. He deserves a whole lot more. He deserves to be happy.
And John is determined to make sure that it happens and stays that way-whether in sparingly decorated motel rooms or in a galaxy they call home.
