June diversions

Jul 01, 2008 00:27

This month I have mostly been walking and working, so there's very little to report in the way of diversions...

Films: None. Nada. Zip. I have watched not a single new-to-me film in the past month :-(

Books: I am still persevering with The Golden Notebook, which is slowly becoming less insufferable, mainly because, halfway through, Lessing has finally gotten around to telling a story. A story about insufferably smug and pretentious middle-class communist wankers, sure, but a story nonetheless. I persevere.

TV: Reichenbach Falls, based on a short story by Ian Rankin, has a character called Jack Harvey who is an crime fiction writer (Ian Rankin wrote three books under the pseudonym Jack Harvey); the main character is a drunken divorced rule-breaking Edinburgh copper called RebusBuchan, whose capable young sidekick is a DS called SiobhanSinead. He has a Ian Rankin book on his bookshelf (the contents of which bore a striking resemblance to mine). Rankin makes a cameo appearance talking to Harvey at a book launch. Buchan drinks in The Oxford Bar, a real Edinburgh pub that is also Rebus' local. This is meta on meta on meta. If Rankin wrote this whilst planning Exit Music, I might just die from meta overload.
Other TV this month includes House S4, season finale next week. This season has been great fun; where some TV shows play with the conventions of the genre, this show plays with the conventions of the previous three seasons.

Music: Watched Dan Hartland (at the final Saturday Night At The Queens *sniffle*) and Alanis Morisette; listening to Eli "Paperboy" Reed and The True Loves.

Football: Watched lots and lots of football. Euro 2008 wasn't not half bad; some shite boring games, but a great many good ones. Too many going into extra time and penalties, but some pretty good football going on.

EDIT: We've also been playing Lego Indiana Jones, which is oodles and oodles of fun :-)
