A German, an Englishman and an Aussie were lounging around discussing vegan activism yesterday afternoon in east London when it occurred to them that perhaps they should eat something for dinner. Some scrabbling around the cupboard turned up a few interesting bits and pieces. A tin of coconut cream, a tin of cherries, a tin of chickpeas. Actually alot of things in tins. Plus some cabbage, red onion and potato. And a really big bag of pumpkin seeds.
This resulted in what I like to call crash cooking. There is no recipe, you make do with whatever is lying around. It involves a fair bit of discussion, thinking about what should make sense taste wise and working out substitutes. If you know what you are doing, you can often be surprised at what you end up with. This is what last night's efforts brought us...
Cabbage Chickpea Curry
Stuff we found
1 red onion chopped
2 medium potatoes chopped
1 very small cabbage chopped
1 tin of chopped tomatoes
1 tin of chickpeas
2 tablespoons of rapeseed oil
some chilli flakes
a few tablespoons of curry paste
1 seitian steak (though really you could have left it out)
What we did it
* Heat the rapeseed oil and sauteed the onion until slightly clear
* Add chopped seitian steak and potatoes
* Add curry paste and chilli flakes
* Keep stirring the lot for about 10-15 minutes on medium heat
* Add tin of tomatoes, drained chickpeas and cabbage
* Stir through well, put on low heat, stirring every few minutes and add water as required so that there is some nice gravy
* Serve once the potato is cooked though on brown rice
ooer dessert
* Take vanilla Swedish Glace dairy-free icecream
* Add some tinned cherries in fruit juice
* Top with freshly toasted pumpkin seeds
* Serve over discussions of politics and campaigning
