Do NOT get a male cat if you are going to feed your animal vegan, vegan food seems to not be appropriate for male cats (this is what i have heard from others who have attempted their feline friends on vegan diets) - if possible find a cat that has already been ON a vegan diet and is thriving, because some cats will be fine, others will not.
if you are overly worried about cats, i suggest getting a dog instead (NOT A DOBERMAN) and trying the dog on a vegan diet, as they are not obligate carnivores like cats are.
*nods* then i suggest a pretty girl kitty, and where possible one that is already vegan, though that would be hard to find, because i would totally hate to hear kitty was not doing well on a vegan diet, then you would be faced with the decision to either feed her unvegan food, to let her health suffer, or find her a home that would feed her a meat-based diet. That said, I have heard that a lot of cats do well on a vegan diet, but it is a risk :)
I personally don't feed my cats vegan. I have read lots of posts in here about vegan and cats. I know there have been a few ppl in here who DO feed there cats a vegan diet. So it is possible but I think its tricky, just remember a lot of cats can eaither be finicky at what they eat or very sensetive to what they eat. So if your cat can't handle a vegan diet just a warning. And now hopefully the ppl who do feed vegan can help you out w the rest. one of my cats are very picky and i have to watch what they eat or they'll vomit it right up. I have no problem w the vegan diet on animals as long as they are healthy i just don't do it. So good luck!
I feed my cats vegan (got 2) and they are healthy. Their fur is smoother to the touch and shines more bright. Took one of them to the vet last Wednesday and everything was ok :) In addition, when a friend of mine is traveling and leaves his cat at my place, she only eats vegan. Even though I put her “traditional” food in her plate, she eats my cats’ food during the time she’s at home.
Even though I don't own a vegan cat (my boyfriend owns a cat, and feeds it wholistic, though non-vegan food), I would say if you're getting a kitty, especially one from the shelter, transition it over to vegan food instead of just putting it straight onto it. Sort of like, first week 1/4 vegan food, 3/4 regular, 2nd week 1/2 vegan, 1/2 regular, 3rd week 3/4 vegan 1/4 regular, and then altogether vegan. I know this would require you to purchase non-vegan food at first, but you'd want to do what's best for the kitty.
