Hallo, I 've been a vegetarian for 19 years, and since last year I've been moving in direction of veganism. My friend is helping me get re-balanced. I need to buy a book on nutrition, so I can work out how to eat healthier and get all those failing vitamines.

Has anyone got any suggestions for such a book ?

Thanks

I recommend this book to everyone because it was the first book I got after becoming vegan, and it helped me out immensely. Becoming Vegan by Brenda Davis and Vesanto Melina has sample meal plans, explanations of nutrients and examples of foods in which one can find them, chapters for vegan athletes and vegans trying to gain or lose weight, and almost everything one needs to know while transitioning to a vegan diet. A worthy investment!

Thanks for the recommendation. Janine who's advising, didn't actually ask me to find a book for vegans, just a book on nutrition.

But she's advised me to drink soy milk, stop drinking coffee/black tea (where I normally consume most of my milk), so basically I just need to stop the occasional use of cheese and consumption of baked wares with diary, and I'm almost a vegan. (almost because, I can't work out if things like my shampoo is vegan or not)

Question:
How deep does the book go into nutrition ?

I can get the book here in Germany through amazon germany (takes a couple of weeks, so I expect they have it in stock in UK). I think I'll buy it but, maybe I need a book that goes deeper into nutrition ?

Anyway, the reason I have to find things out for myself, is Janine advised me to start eating fish, but after nearly twenty years of veggie-ness, that's not a place I'd even consider going.

Thanks

I decided I would scan some pages for you, to give you an idea of the content. In my opinion, it is really detailed. I don't know what exactly you are looking for when you say "deep into nutrition," but here are a few examples of the content.

Prescription for Nutritional Healing by Dr. Phyllis Balch is the most comprehensive nutrition book I've ever found. It covers all aspects of nutrition and health and promotes diets mostly raw and vegan as possible. I believe there's a section on veganism, but I'm not sure. If you just want a guide to vegan nutrition, I'm sure there are (much much) smaller more specific books out there. But this one covers... everything, and it's under $30.

Thanks.

I think this is the sort of book my firend Janine wanted me to get.

So I've found a second-copy in amazon germany for around $10, so I've ordered it.

I'm still buying the "Becoming Vegan" as in the first comment, but I hope they'll both be usefull to me.

thanks for your help
