Understanding

“J-Jade… stop it.” Platina pushed his advisor away from him weakly, and Jade suspected the weakness was either the lack of oxygen, or the fact that he really didn’t want to stop.

“Really, your struggles make you all the more enticing, Platina.” Jade reached for his monocle on the cabinet next to where Jade had pushed the king against a wall, knowing Platina would fidget and complain. Platina didn’t like to be scrutinised when he was in such a state.

Jade leaned back, his eyes narrowing as he took in Platina’s dishevelled state. The blue eyes, narrowed in contempt and disdain at his jests at any other time, were now wide and dark, endearing to him even if Platina still tried to keep up the glare. The way his lips turned into a frown of displeasure didn’t fool Jade, as the king was also panting and said lips were swollen and pink.

Jade lifted a hand to Platina’s cheek, his thumb brushing over the blush formed there. His other hand automatically retreated into Platina’s mussed hair, his hands grasping the long strands of lavender removed from the ponytail. “Your face tells me that you like it,” he said slowly, his lips forming into a smirk.

Jade watched in fascination as both Platina’s glare and blush turned more intense and chuckled low in his throat. He leaned in again, stealing another kiss from the king’s lips as he lifted his knee inbetween Platina’s legs, effectively trapping him.

Platina struggled to get loose, but found his will slipping as he was assaulted by a number of pleasurable sensations. He closed his eyes for a moment, parting his lips automatically for the tongue playfully licking his bottom lip, and shifted his hips so Jade’s knee touched him there, almost -
Still, to do this kind of things in a public hallway, when he was the king and was most likely monitored around the clock…Platina decided it was highly unacceptable, not to mention highly embarrassing. Then again, Jade would probably get off on spectators, wouldn’t he?

Collecting his resolve, he placed his hands previously hanging limply past his sides to Jade’s shoulders, pushing him away with one big shove. Jade stumbled backwards, staring at Platina in mild surprise. He thought Platina had been enjoying himself.

“J-Jade, don’t do that sort of thing!” Platina winced inwardly- he sounded far too panicked and affected by this. And he shouldn’t, as it wasn’t the first time. Jade kept doing this to him, and kept doing it in places everyone could see them. He hated the fact that he always lost his cool around Jade, but the man kept weaselling his way under his skin.

One green eyebrow rose at that, surprised and mildly amused. “Do what, Platina?” His voice sounded smug, which fuelled Platina’s annoyance even more. In any other situation, he would’ve kept silent at the rhetorical question - surely Jade knew what he had been doing - but the combination of that infuriating smirk and the taunting voice forced him to respond.

“Y-You know what you were doing. Don’t do it in public, I’ve told you already.” Jade didn’t reply, but instead took a few steps forward, his gaze questioning as he leaned forward again, forcing Platina back up against the wall.

“J-Jade, this is not a challenge or a game! You said so yourself- a king has to be respected in order to be a good ki- ah!” There was a lap at Platina’s ear before teeth closed around his earlobe, and the sound of sucking on the sensitive flesh filled his ear and his train of thought was completely lost. Platina’s knees trembled and he, very unwillingly, grabbed Jade’s shoulders again, only this time for stability. He trembled against Jade, his breath coming in shallow gasps. Unwittingly, memories from last night came back, with Jade’s naked skin brushing over his, the smell of sweat and that shampoo Jade uses whenever he wants some special attention, and -

“Jade, s-stop it… before I have you executed.” Platina really couldn’t use that kind of reaction to his body right now, when the only thing hiding his one-piece was his wide robe, which Jade was rather fond of taking off. He silently mourned the loss of warmth and stimulation when Jade indeed took a few steps back. All the more proof that it had gone too far already.

“Platina, such harsh words from a king… you know, the people won’t accept a king who is unjustly cruel. Especially to those he is extra close to… what would happen to the ones he doesn’t even know?” Though amused, Jade kept his distance now. The threats lately had been increasing, ranging from Platina topping - which Jade simply found amusing - to him cutting off certain parts of his anatomy.

Platina sighed in annoyance. “A lecture at such a moment, Jade?” Nervously, he tried fixing up his cape, suddenly very relieved it was long. “If you do insist on being my advisor on a time like this, perhaps not doing… certain things to a king would be a part of your tasks as well.”

“Since Platina-sama is the king now, the king would have to obey such a thing from me first.” Jade smirked again, and Platina groaned inwardly. A challenge? Another one? Would Jade never grow tired from teasing him?

When no reaction came from Platina, Jade assumed consent, and grabbed Platina’s hip through the thick fabric of the cape. He really loved the cape - it smelled of Platina- but he preferred Platina out of it.

When his hands touched Platina, Jade was met with a furious glare. “Y-You leave me no other choice, then…” A sigh. “Fine, I order you to stop… touching me.”

Jade’s smirk faded for a moment, which secretly pleased Platina. “Very well, Platina-sama. If there’s nothing else you want from me right now, I will excuse myself.” Platina couldn’t put his finger on it, but Jade sounded different than usual.

As Jade’s figure walked away from him, Platina couldn’t help but feel that he’d regret this conversation.

---

The moon was bright that night, Platina decided. It was already dark, the night as close to black as it would get before returning to its usual blue state. Without realising it, he’d waited up for Jade. He wondered when they had gotten so close. Sure, sleeping next to someone was more comfortable than sleeping alone, if only for the warmth, but… did he really depend on Jade that much? The thought frightened him.

Jade had managed to escape him for the remainder of the day, leaving Platina with thoughts about the obnoxious advisor the entire day.

Sapphirus had once told him that when Jade pretended to not care at all, he actually cared the most. And apparently, Platina thought of people only when they stopped appearing in front of him every minute of the day. Platina wondered whether it was because Jade was his advisor, and thus in some way, controlled his thoughts. Another thought that disturbed him.

After what seemed like an eternity, he grew angry at himself, waiting for that selfish advisor of his like some sort of common housewife, and angrily threw the silken covers over himself as he went to bed.

---

The next morning, Platina requested Jade’s presence. Even if he did not require anymore physical or magical training, Jade had strongly recommended Platina to understand more about the people and the history of Naraku. And though Jade didn’t know the history of Naraku any better than he did, it was fun- although tiresome, because Jade hardly ever took the facts at face-value- to study together.

However, when he arrived at the royal library - accompanied by a guard, of all people - he saw Jade sitting with Sapphirus. Platina looked around for Alex, but his brother wasn’t to be found anywhere. Platina couldn’t say he was surprised, as Alex was never one for books.

Jade looked up at the twin footsteps in the otherwise silent library, and Platina sent the guard away. He looked at Jade, feeling both annoyed that he had found someone to take his place so easily, as well as an emotion that made his chest ache slightly. Platina would have to enquire Jade about what that could mean when they were on better footing. He’d always written it off as part of his poor condition, but it only happened when Jade was around.

Jade stood up, smiling lightly. “Platina-sama, I’ve gotten you another tutor so I wouldn’t be… lured in by your lovely face.” Platina blushed at Jade’s directness and glanced in the purple-haired man’s direction. Sapphirus looked mildly uncomfortable at the direction the conversation was going and was pointedly not looking at either of them.

Platina gritted his teeth. “J-Jade, not when there are other people around!” He took a few steps into Jade’s direction, his fists clenched in suppressed annoyance. “And you are perfectly adequate as a teacher… I don’t require Sapphirus-san’s help.”

Jade tilted his head and placed a finger on Platina’s lips, shushing him. “Platina-sama, I do think it is in your best interest if you took lessons from Sapphirus.” Again, that sting in his chest, but now because of the surprise that Jade didn’t use any honorific for Sapphirus. He grew angry at himself for being surprised at it- Jade had been, and still was, very close to Sapphirus. Even now, Platina couldn’t say that he understood what Jade was going through; only Sapphirus could.

Jade continued, not realising Platina’s inner struggle. “Apparently, he discussed the history of the second half-angel riots already, because instead of chronologically, he teaches Alex the subjects he finds most interesting at the time. Quite illogical if you ask me, but since Sapphirus knows the subject at hand, please discuss it with him.” Jade’s finger trailed from Platina’s lips to his chin, then left Platina’s skin altogether. Platina suppressed a shiver.

“Fine. If that is what you want.” Platina sat down in front of Sapphirus, waiting for Jade’s footsteps to fade before looking up at his new instructor. “I apologise for Jade’s childish antics… although I’m sure you’ve experienced them before.” Platina was still somewhat hesitant to talk about Jade’s past, especially with someone other than Jade. It still unnerved him slightly, although he had accepted Jade’s past as being a part of Jade, the way he so easily forfeited his own race and switched sides was somewhat worrying. The fact that he had to trust Jade based purely on loyalty alone was very worrying.

Sapphirus nodded, feeling the same reserve Platina did. His past with Jade was complicated, even to someone who had been there first-hand. “Shall we proceed with the lesson, Platina-sama?” he suggested instead, smiling kindly as he opened the book in front of him.

---

Jade’s game of delegating tasks and taunting kept going, eventually making everyone weary of running into Jade or Platina. Platina thought Jade was being childish, and refused to give into this game of endurance.

Even when he had reassured himself of his patience over and over again, when he ran into Jade in the hallway connecting his room and Jade’s, he made a move not unlike Jade’s and pushed the green-haired man into the stone wall. Jade gave a small ‘umpf’ before looking down at the smaller man, smirking at the tentative grasp on his shoulders.

“So, Platina-sama, what will you command me to do this time?” He easily shook himself free from Platina’s grasp, dusting off his robe.

Realisation dawned on Platina. “Is that what this is about? That I commanded you?” he hissed, aware that the walls had ears in this castle.

Jade tilted his head, his smirk increasing. “You honestly didn’t realise?” he drawled as he readjusted his monocle, which had shifted on his nose by Platina’s surprise cornering. “Platina-sama, if you understand your closest servants so little, what do you think your peo-“

Platina cut him off with a withering glare. “Stop it. You are not my servant and you know that. You made me command you… You make no sense. I… I don’t understand you. You told me that, if I wanted you to stop, I would have to tell you to.” Platina slowly felt his anger vanishing, leaving him completely vulnerable in front of Jade.

Platina looked so confused that Jade decided to take pity on him, and wrapped his arms around the man’s waist, pulling him against his own body. “You’re so cute, Platina.” When he felt Platina’s stance grow rigid at the words, he released his grip. “Remember when I told you, the first time we met, that only if you could control me well, it would show you that you were a good leader, because I don’t take orders from anyone?”

Platina nodded, narrowing his eyes. Remembering Jade acting so rudely on their first meeting was definitely a moment that he wouldn’t forget easily, if ever. It had been so different from how he had been treated by everyone else that the man had immediately piqued his interest.

“Well, I was just showing you that you were a good leader by obeying your command… but personally, I don’t like being commanded by someone of a higher rank if I’m personally involved with them. So you can see my difficulty…” Jade tutted, shaking his head sadly. “Although I had hoped you would’ve been able to see that by now.”

Platina scowled. Jade smirked again. “If you really knew me, you would’ve known that. I see we have a lot of subjects you have yet to be taught adequately in, if you ever want to understand your people.”

“You are not my people. …Nobody understands you, so perhaps not understanding you brings me closer to the people of Naraku,” hissed Platina. Honestly, Jade was being so unreasonable! Why did he have to understand Jade? Nobody understood Jade. Platina suspected not even he himself.

The smirk on Jade’s face vanished for a split second. “That may be so, but-“

“But,” Platina interrupted, putting a finger on Jade’s lips like Jade had done to him before, “I’m willing to try and understand you.” He quickly removed his finger, blushing at his forwardness. Surely Jade was teaching him all the wrong things, if it required him to be so forward and bold. What little Platina knew of diplomacy, this didn’t resemble it at all.

Jade quieted before smiling happily. “That will be quite a challenge.”

Platina nodded. “I accepted that before, when I… allowed you into my bed.” Platina felt the blush returning to his cheeks and cursed himself for it silently. Jade exploited every show of weakness.

Jade grinned, but let that particular memory slide. They could fight later over who had allowed who into whose bed.

“J-Just… don’t do it openly. Too much.” Platina added. Were he a less proud man, he would’ve added ‘please’ to the equation. However, being with Jade robbed him of too much pride to begin with, that he wasn’t about to start chipping away at what little pride he had left.

“A king’s pride, eh?” Jade laughed at that. “It doesn’t become you, Platina, to be so prideful when you’re with acquaintances.”

Platina sighed tiredly. “Another lecture, Jade?” He was so tired of Jade’s ways of talking, and he hadn’t been sleeping all that well in the first place lately. His sheets were cold.

“If you are so opposed, then perhaps a physical lecture, Platina?” Jade leaned forward, intent of finishing what he started. Or atleast, Platina suspected this when he felt the familiar lips on his earlobe again, before teeth - equally familiar, if only on some other place - nipped his ear.

It was all that Platina could do to atleast drag them both back into his room, and lock the door.

---

It was only afterwards, when Platina lay under the sheets, comfortably resting against - and atop of- another warm body, that perhaps Jade had intended this outcome all along.
