Two mockingbirds in the hand

I had never read To Kill a Mockingbird but became intrigued by the Harper Lee character from watching Capote and especially Infamous. So I started the book. Then Danny rented the movie while I was only halfway through. It was an excuse to sit up until 4:30 this morning finishing it. This evening we watched the movie.

With the book so fresh in my mind, seeing the movie was an eerie experience, it captured the spirit so precisely. I was impressed that it did not censor much, except unfortunately toning down the racism (only scoundrels expressed it, no polite, middle-class people or cute children). Gregory Peck and Mary Badham portrayed Atticus and Scout exactly as I had imagined them.

Above all I am enthralled by Lee's narrative skill. The movie made a reasonable impression of it.
