This is another product of last.fm's recommended playlist. From the first time I heard it, I loved it. It has all the right instruments and a wonderful blend of sound. It sounds beautiful and Matt Pond does a great job with the vocals. I'm probably going to look into more of their library as it sounds like something I would like. Not much else to say on this one though. The rhythm and lead guitars are great as well.
Another song sung by James Mercer on my list. Citizen is not a song that grabbed me initially. However, the lyrics caught my ear and they were just so...interesting to me, especially the chorus. Mercer is essentially asking the listener to ask their own questions and seek out their own answers. It's quite deep and has always made me think while listening to it. Musically, it is quite haunting, which goes hand in hand with the lyrics of the songs. Really an incredible song.
Coldplay really needs no introduction. I can safely say they are my favorite band and songs like Trouble are a huge reason. This is an incredibly beautiful song. I first heard it on The Point not too long after hearing Yellow. It is so incredible to me that those 2 incredible songs came from the same album and that that album was their debut. And musically, it is really minimalistic. The piano is the main instrument with just a simple snare drum for percussion. There is a little guitar and a bass, but it all just compliments each other so wonderfully with Chris Martin's voice. There is really nothing about this song I don't like.
I'm starting to see a pattern of slower, quieter, beautiful songs here. So I first heard of Little Dragon on the newest album by the Gorillaz, Plastic Beach. She was a guest on two of the songs, and one of the songs was Empire Ants. I really loved her vocals on that song and so I did some research on her. Her real name is Yukimi Nagano, and she is the daughter of a Japanese father and a Swedish-American mother. The band itself (Little Dragon) is actually a Swedish electronic band. Anyway, after buying her 2nd album (Machine Dreams (2009)), I went and took a listen to their debut album, the self-titled Little Dragon. Not much jumped out to me, but that one that did I purchased immediately. I found Twice to be so beautiful and haunting and it also happened to have a very interesting shadow puppet music video that I watched many times.
Yay! Let's do something a little upbeat, ya? I first heard this song way back on The Point and it quickly became my favorite song. Maybe I can safely say it was my very first #1 favorite song until R.E.M.'s The Great Beyond came out. However, I had no idea who actually sang the song for quite some time since the radio never said and I had no money to buy music or internet to find out what the music is. There is a lot of stuff going on (as you can see in the video) with the bongo drumset (that is common for a lot of older Guster songs) and a typewriter. When I did finally track the song down, I got the album from the library and listened to it a TON. It's not my favorite album by Guster now (as I generally like their newer stuff better), but its still VERY solid and a fun listen. I love Guster so much.
