If you can't tell, James Mercer (The Shins) is the lead singer for Broken Bells. I was super excited about Broken Bells because it is a collaboration album between one of my favorite singer/songwriters (James Mercer) and one of my favorite producers (Brian Burton aka Danger Mouse). I listened to this album almost constantly, and the ending of the album was bittersweet because the final song is truly one of the coolest songs out there. Whenever I hear The Mall & Misery, I want more. The Guitar licks are all very sick. There are a ton of guitar lines in this song and it is all layered so beautifully by Burton. My favorite is probably the slide guitar parts. Then there are the lyrics, which speaks to the modern age and consumerism. How everyone is measured by what they possess and not what they do with their life. I also noticed that a lot of my top favorite songs have very noticeable intros. I LOVE intros to songs. I don't usually want to hear the singer's voice in the first 10-20 seconds of a song. This song has 70 second intro which makes me very happy.
And Travis makes their debut on my list! I probably first heard Travis with their single, Side on The Point, but I had no idea who they were until TK rediscovered them a couple years back because he found Side. From there, I had the perfect opportunity to take advantage of a deal from some website where I got 50 free songs. So, I used some of those songs to get a Dave Matthews album, and used the rest to get almost 40 songs by Travis. One is this incredibly beautiful, yet depressing song about someone in a hopeless situation with pretty much no joy in their life. It's all quite sad, but lead singer Fran Healy has an awesome voice and sings this song so well. It's like a dream...plus in a stupid way it reminds me of an old Halo CE map. They have nothing related except the name, but still. That was the first term I'd heard the phrase "Pipe Dream."
First off, I would like to thank a friend from High School named Travis, who first introduced me to The Killers. Apparently I completely skipped over them those years. I originally picked up Sam's Town from the library. It was okay, but then I sought out some singles and came across All These Things That I've Done. Thematically, it is actually quite similar to Travis' (no relation to my High School Friend) song Pipe Dreams, about a guy who isn't the man that he wants to be. He's trying to rationalize all the things that he's done to try and show he is actually a good man. I really like this song for Brandon Flowers' vocals and the guitar riff. Great song. #67.
Dave Matthews makes his first appearance on my list as well with this song. You probably noticed, but the name of my LJ is a lyric from this song. It's a very upbeat happy song. In an interview, Dave Matthews said the song came from times when the band was doing drugs aka tripping. Still, its a fun to sing along with and dance to and is full of energy. Love this song!
There! #66-100 are now complete! Slowly creeping toward the halfway mark! So much good stuff left to go!
