Ryosuke faithfully waited for her on the promised place, but then something unfortunate happened...

Notes: Written for Dai-chan’s belated birthday gift. Huh, I’m three weeks late? Whatever :P Plot is from the old manga I read years ago, but I’ve changed many of it.

It was raining. Hard, and cold. Such an extreme weather for one evening of spring. Daiki stood far enough from him, resulting him not knowing about his best friend’s existence. He silently sat on the bench near a big sakura tree.

That guy had been waiting for hours, but he never left that place. Daiki was not sure. He didn’t know if he should tell him or not...

In the middle of his hesitation, he was shocked by the sudden lightning. And that was not just one time he would be shocked.

“Look out!!”

Someone shouted to the guy sitting on the bench, warning him about something. Something that was running to him with a speed of light.

Too late. That guy didn’t realize he was being called because the hard rain prevented him from hearing clearly. It happened really fast. Right in front of his eyes, Daiki saw his best friend’s body hit and  thrown by a huge truck coming from his side.

“RYOSUKEEEE!!!!!”

--------------

He rose up, sweat all over his body. He tried hard to control his heartbeat, not realizing a drop of tears rolling on his chubby cheek.

“No... Please, not this nightmare again...”

He laid back, hugging his pillow and beginning to sob his heart out. Again, for the nth time of his nights.

--------------

“Daiki, what’s wrong?”

He startled when his girlfriend, Rika, suddenly appeared from behind and tapped his shoulder.

“W-What-Nothing. I’m fine, yo.”

“You lied. Look, you got black circles on your eyes.”

“Well, yesterday I couldn’t sleep,” he tried to smile.

“Nightmare again?”

He replied with a nod.

“About Ryosuke-kun again?”

His smile flattened.

“Yappari. Could you stop blaming yourself about what had happened to him? It’s not your fault!”

“How do you know if it’s not my fault?”

“You were not even on that location when the accident happened!”

“I should have told him earlier-!” he suddenly stopped.

“About what?”

“...nothing.”

Daiki exited the classroom, leaving her with a confused face.

--------------

“Dai-chan! Onegaishimasu!”

“Mou...“

“Pretty pweeease~ You’re close to her!”

“Well, yeah but-“

“You know I’m your best friend.”

“Ugh, that excuse...”

“Tehee~ Onegai, ne?”

“...okay...”

“Yahoo~! Thank you, my twin brother!”

“Can’t you just give it by yourself? I’m surprised that the famous school’s idol Yamada Ryosuke can’t even look at his crush right on her eyes...”

Ryosuke rolled his eyes.

“Well, duh. I’m a shy type, remember? Rika-chan’s eyes always pierce me and it hurts my fragile heart...”

“Eww, cheesy.”

“Whatever. Ne, please return back this handkerchief to her...”

“Just give it right now. She’s in the classroom.”

“No no. This handkerchief will be my invitation so if I gave it back by myself then it wouldn’t be a surprise anymore.

“Wait, invitation?”

Ryosuke opened up the handkerchief and showed a small paper attached in it.

“Let her read it after you give this back. It’s written when and where I’m gonna wait for her.”

“Ah, a date invitation?”

“Not really. I’m gonna confess.”

Daiki’s eyes widened.

“It’s about time. I can’t wait anymore. I will tell my true feeling to her, right under the sakura tree she loves the most in this town.”

Ryosuke smiled, caressing the pink sakura-patterned fabric on his hold.

“But I will only be ready if I’m on that place. I can’t talk to her right now and I don’t even know her phone number. So, Dai-chan. I really need your help.”

“...I understand.”

“Yosha,” Ryosuke gave the handkerchief to Daiki. “I love you, Dai-chan.”

Daiki smiled, seeing his best friend beaming happily.

--------------

Daiki threw himself to his bed. Not being able to clear the scenes from his mind, he sighed desperately.

“Damn... DAMNIT!!” his scream muffled on his own pillow.

“Why are those scenes always haunting me...? I’m not the one who should be blamed here, damnit!”

--------------

“ Rika-chan,” Daiki spotted her leaning her back on the wall, on the backyard of the school.

She had asked him to meet her after school. Taking a chance with that opportunity, he planned to give back the handkerchief.

He put his hand in his pocket.

“So Rika-chan, I have someth-“

He didn’t get to finish his sentence since Rika already wrapped her arms around his shoulder, hugging him tightly.

“I like you. Very very much.”

He was stunned.

Nobody knew he had been loving that girl since elementary school. Not even his best friend, Ryosuke.

Rika was his childhood friend so she was close to him. And since that time Daiki had kept his own feeling to himself.

Especially after knowing about Ryosuke’s crush toward her.

But right then, it was different. She was the one who confessed her feeling to him. Should he let that chance go?

He wrapped his arms around her waist, hugging her back. He smiled in happiness. Never in his life he felt so alive.

And the fabric inside his pocket had been forgotten.

--------------

The break time finally rang. Some students went outside to go to the school canteen when the others were still in the class. Rika and her friends took a seat beside Daiki and then she gave him a bento for lunch. They all ate together.

“Good.Af.Ter.Nooooooon~!” their school radio had started. “This is Kuzuhara! How’s it goin’, everybody? Yo yo, we’ll start this radio by reading a song request from someone, yo!”

“Cool! Finally he’s gonna start with a song! Usually he started with his non sense story first, ne?” Rika giggled, followed by the others.

“Eeeto, this song was requested by... Punyukichi-san!”

Daiki froze.

“The letter said that he wanted to present this song to... Penguin-san! They’re best friends and they always do a duet with this song whenever they go to karaoke. So, Penguin-san! Please enjoy! ‘Garasu no Shounen’ by Kinki Kids!”

He let his chopsticks fall when the song started.

“Daiki, what’s wrong?”

He turned his head down, not saying a thing.

The only one who called him Penguin and who was called Punyukichi by him was... Ryosuke.

Huh? A chaptered fic? At first I didn’t plan this was gonna be a chaptered fic. But if I didn’t divide this into parts, I’m afraid this would be too long for a one-shot fic.
