I overslept again this morning and missed my morning class. Of course, I was up til 5am, not for any particular reason, I just couldn’t sleep. It’s weird, it was the same thing that happened to me yesterday. My alarm woke me up, I remember it waking me up, then the next thing I remember is waking up again an hour or so later. I have no recollection of going back to sleep or anything, and in fact I was intending to actually get up. Fortunately, I seem to be able to keep up with Intermediate Macroeconomics while missing classes.
I met with Cha for lunch, it didn’t end so well. She wants to study abroad in Spain this summer, but needs money for her plane ticket. She’s asking me to take out another short-term loan to pay for it. She doesn’t understand my extreme reluctance to do this is in part because I hate short term loans. But also, because she’s done this before. Begging and/or demanding I take out a loan, promising me she would repay it. However, she hasn’t always been so good at the repaying it part. That’s largely why I’m only taking two classes this semester.
Last spring, she insisted I take out a “book loan” from Tech, promising me she would pay it back. Well, she didn’t. At least not on time. Consequently, when the fall semester rolled around I had a hold on my account and I now owed $800 on what was originally a $500 loan. She did pay it off, but only because the only way I could register for classes was to pay the debt off. Unfortunately, when she finally did pay it, it was already well into the registration period, which is frustrating because at Tech, veterans (such as myself) get to register first, then seniors, then juniors, etc. Except that because of the hold I was one of the last people to register, forced to take whatever classes were still open. This also meant that when registering for parking all the commuter lots were full, so I was forced to get assigned to one of the satellite parking area. This was annoying for two reasons. For one thing the commuter lots have a $6 fee (for the year) for parking while the satellite lot was $135. What’s more because I was registering so late, the fee didn’t hit my account until after my refund had already been disbursed, so the parking fee was in fact not paid. A fact I didn’t discover until I was trying to register for Spring classes to find yet another hold on my account. (This was like the fourth or fifth semester this had happened.) I managed to get that hold straightened out, except that by the time I did, almost all the classes I needed were full. This included Intermediate Microeconomics, which I really, really wanted to take. In fact all the courses I needed were either full or, in a few cases, not available in the Spring. This is why I’m only taking two classes this semester.
And now, Cha wants me to take out a short-term loan for her, promising me she’ll pay it back. The problem is the only place I can get a short-term loan is the Cash Store, and if the payments aren’t made on time, they’ll draft them directly from my account. This means that when (not if, when) Cha reneges on her promise to pay the loan for me, I will be stuck in the position of being unable to pay my rent and/or my car payment. The simple fact is I don’t trust her to keep her word to pay this loan back, because this wouldn’t be the first (or second or even third) time she’s done this.
After my class today I went by to see Huiying. We didn’t go hiking, because she had too much to do today. This was okay with me, because I was planning to make meatloaf for dinner, and wasn’t sure how long it would take me anyway. But once again, I walked her to her car and she drove me to mine. I found my physical response to her presence to be a little unexpected, which surprised me a bit (and embarrassed me slightly) though I doubt she noticed.
On my way home I went to the store to pick up a few things, then came home, checked my mail and got to work. After telling Cha I would take her up on her offer/request for me to cook my meatloaf at her place because she wanted to try it. I did all the prep work for the meatloaf, and mashed potatoes, at my place then took it to her place to cook. The meatloaf turned out well, though I was trying an experiment. Instead of using just ground beef, I mixed it with ground pork. I didn’t really notice a difference, though Cha said she thinks I should leave out the pork next time.
Interestingly for all the work I did there, my kitchen is actually quite clean. I wiped the counter down and put my dirty dishes in the dishwasher and ran it before I left. I wasn’t always this fastidious. I think it’s having a dishwasher that makes the difference. It’s a lot easier when I just load it than add some soap and turn it on. I still wash some dishes by hand, but I’ll often let that stuff sit for a while before I get around to washing.
I’m pretty tired now, because I only got five or so hours of sleep last night. I think I’m going to lie down and read a bit. I doubt I’ll post again tonight though.
