No, not comic books. Comics and comedians who become actors in funny movies. There are some people who actually kind of annoy me with their performance, and yet I still like them and watch their movies anyway. I had been thinking about this lately after seeing several Adam Sandler movies. There's nothing specifically wrong with Adam Sandler, but for some reason, there's always really crappy juvenile humor stuck in his movies. And yet, there is a sort of nice bittersweet quality to some of his movies, especially when he teams up with Drew Barrymore.
I was reminded again of this when I watched Annie Hall for the first time recently. I've seen enough Woody Allen movies: Hannah and Her Sisters, Sleeper, Take the Money and Run, A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy, PLay It Again Sam, just to name stuff with him as a character in the movie. And I was thinking how annoying his standard character is: basically hates everyone, hypercritical, snobbish, turns all his veiled hate into paranoid fantasies to justify his negativity. Annie Hall is the story of a toxic relationship: Alvy improves Annie but also ruins her in many ways, and their breakup is one of the best things that ever happened to her. But despite the basic unlikeability of Woody Allen's stock character, the movies are still entertaining. Well, except for Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy, which was forgettable.
