So I'm working on
this dark modern fantasy novel and I'm looking for other dark modern fantasies for adults. I say for adults because most of the stuff I find that sounds good is actually YA lit. Now I'm sure it's great, blah blah blah, and please don't get on my back about how seriously good YA can be if I give it a chance -- it's not what I want to write and it's not what I want to read.
The only ones coming to mind at the moment are Neil Gaiman, both Neverwhere and the darker American Gods. If you know of any really beautiful modern fantasy (that is to say, not set in the future/on another world/in another dimension/in the past/etc., but set here, now, kind of like Supernatural but, you know, more literary) please rec me some. I'm searching out books in hopes of being granted some ~inspiration.
Thank you in advance! <3
Books currently on my "to read" list:
-
The Windup Girl-
The City and The City-
Pamplisest*
*OT but if you get the chance to read Catherynne Valente, please do. I just finished the second book in The Orphan's Tales duo and both contained some of the most breathtaking, delicate imagery I've even read, and some of the most unique storytelling. I highly recommend it, despite her silly pen name.
