Family traditions

Every year we run out to Eckerts to go apple picking for Sydney Li's birthday. Its a tradition. Every year I get jazzed about going. Its tradition!

"I Love Apple Picking!" I say every year. We all get bundled up in fall sweaters and jeans and drive the hour and a half to Eckerts. Its a tradition.

Sydney Li shares a birthday with Johnny Apple Seed. So every year a man in costume tries to get his picture taken with Sydney Li. And every year she freaks out a cries her eyes out because she's afraid of costume characters. She always has been . . .how could we forget that? But its ok cause, Its a tradition!

I love watching the Apple Dumpling Band play country music while the kids dance to exhaustion and the grown ups partake of enough funnel cake and cider to take down a mountain lion. The kids always cry when its time to get going but I always reassure them the apple picking is even better than the dancing. Its a tradition!

I love going through the little shop of apple themed goodies and halloween delights. Everything is outrageously expensive so the kids whine when they don't get what they want and you could get most of it at the Walgreens on the corner but your here so its coller somehow. I mean, Its a tradition!

I love the hayless wagon with the double teared seats. The little ones on top the older group on bottom. The little ones kicking you between the shoulders and complaining it takes to long but you still have to wrestle them off but thats ok because, Its a tradition!

And then finally its time for what we came for! The big moment has arrived! Everyone has thier own bag to pick tons of beautiful apple.
But the kids can only reach the low fruit on the bush.
And its like 90 degrees now cause we wasted the nice weather dancing. Wish I had let the kids wear t shirts . . .
All the in- laws set up a picnic between trees to eat apple but not pick apples . . . and the councelor reminds us again each year that there are no picnics allowed you have to pay for these apples first but I have no way of explaining that until Vang comes back because we came for apples so . . . Vang abandons me with my three kids and the three who came with us and all the realtives who don't speak my language . . .
And they discard all the apples the kids picked since they really were no good but it makes the kids cry and they wanna go back to the fall festival, "come on mama its only 15$!" . . .each.

But by golly we will come home with three bags of perfect apples the kids didn't pick and pictures of the kids dancing and climbing trees and we will proclaim this was the best year yet and we can't wait until next year. And next year we will do the whole thing over cause . . . . Its tradition!

Oh yeah did I mention? I don't even eat apples.
