Title: The Courtship of Kikyou
Author: Seifergrrl
Fandom: Inuyasha
Status: 4 chapters, WIP
Rating: PG

The episode titles of Inuyasha are simple things, but it was right to call Kikyou "tragic".

I've read several renditions of the pre-series Inuyasha/Kikyou story, but Seifergrrl has captured something of the scenes that we are briefly shown between the two. Her characterization of Inuyasha is one of the best I've read. He's not lovable and gruff, but wary and alone. Kikyou seems to have always been a mystery to him.

It's pretty damn tragic that you know where this is all going.

But this is no sweet love story. Yes, there is that tentative reaching out that we see a glimpse of in the series, but their protective instincts are sharp: they both say cruel things when they are hurt, and sometimes Inuyasha doesn't even realize that his words are cruel. Not to mention that they both hide from the truth.

While I enjoyed the scene where Kikyou and Inuyasha talk about his mother, I felt it was a little unrealistic. Inuyasha isn't the "opening up" type of person. Still, I thought Kikyou's comment about why Inuyasha's mother was so sad was particuarly insightful.

If you completely hate Kikyou with an unreasonable passion, then I will quote the author who wrote, "If you hate Kikyou...read the story anyway and maybe you'll change your mind. If you love Kikyou, then this story is for you..."
