Honestly, I don't know what it is about this fic. The plot is completely underdeveloped at this point (despite being 42 chapters into the story!) but the characterizations are spot on and the magical theories are complex and fascinating. If you think you've read every possible variation on The Fifth Year Fic pre-OOtP, you haven't read "The Best Defense". It has something of the Harry Potter charm mixed with the Yu Yu Hakusho humor and is utterly addicting.
Okay, so you've probably seen this premise for a crossover before: a bunch of people go to Hogwarts and pretend to be students. Now imagine Hiei pretending to be a " shounen ningen" (human teenager). Funny stuff. There's a scene where Hiei gets Valentine gifts and is so outraged that he sets fire to them all...right at the breakfast table.
I also appreciated how the author was able to incorporate Japanese traditions, etc. into the story despite it being set in Hogwarts. It seems thoroughly researched and is explained in the author's notes.
The couples in the story tend to mostly be in the YYH cast, and are conventional, featuring Yuusuke/Keiko, Kuwabara/Yukina, and even the beginnings of Hiei/Kurama. Apparently, the HP cast aren't gettin' any. ^^
The author's theory of core magic is most ambitious, but pulled off surprisingly well. When Genkai explain about the different "classes" I got a little lost, but it didn't hinder my reading. I also liked how the author explains how seasonal changes effect core magic because that sets up for major Hiei/Kurama moments.
"The Best Defense" is one of the most regularly updated fics that I read. Check on it once a week and you'll likely find something new.
