Abracadabra

I heat up, I can't cool down
You got me spinnin'
'Round and 'round
'Round and 'round and 'round it goes
Where it stops nobody knows

After my appointment this morning with the Dr. High Geek Optometrist and the Most Gorgeous Optician in the World, I finally have a new pair of glasses on order to replace my currently broken pair. Hopefully I'll get them by the end of next week. According to the computer, my eyes are improving since my last visit, which I certainly won't argue with.

I also ordered the free trial pair of contacts, which I think I'll try out this summer. I haven't worn contacts for something like 10 years - surely they're better now.

Every time you call my name
I heat up like a burnin' flame
Burnin' flame full of desire
Kiss me baby, let the fire get higher

My goal is to have a complete set of music for the Gnostic Mass by the end of the summer, capable of being performed by 3-4 people live, with a printed score and a CD of at least demo quality to go along with it. For musical inspiration, I'm listening to madrigals, chant, Dead Can Dance, sacred drumming, Anuna, select soundtracks (Nostradamus in particular, and the wedding music in Excalibur), and other ritual music.

For this set, I'm primarily limiting myself to the musical cues provided in the script. Once this is done, I'd like to work on a broader set with music for other parts of the Mass as well. Some of the teams have musical selections where no music is specified, and I think it adds a lot to the experience.

I'll need to find out who else would be interested in pursuing that as a medium-term project, and probably set up weekly rehearsals.

Out of the many and varied etymologies for "abracadabra" that I've seen, the one that strikes me the strongest traces it back to a Hebrew phrase which roughly translates to, "It is created as it is spoken."

You make me hot, you make me sigh
You make me laugh, you make me cry
Keep me burnin' for your love
With the touch of a velvet glove

The Rite of Luna (a.k.a. "The Pan Show") requires six officers, three male and three female. No probationers are listed. There's only one musical piece per se, but there are three dances. Pan's poetry recitations make up the bulk of the script. There are three specific rituals in the script: LBRP, LBRH, and a free-form banishing of all ten Sephiroth.

I need to confirm a performance date with the appropriate people (June 18?) so I can start getting that going.

In the mid '90s, I put together the framework for a science fiction/space opera roleplaying game. I never did settle on a completely satisfactory method of character development, but I had a system that wasn't terribly clunky. It was intended to be portable between tabletop, live action, PDA, and computer. It occasionally bubbles up in my mind as something I should do something with, but I'm not entirely sure what exactly that would be at this point.

I feel the magic in your caress
I feel magic when I touch your dress
Silk and satin, leather and lace
Black panties with an angel's face

When I was in high school and Abracadabra was first released, the line "black panties with an angel's face" was considered too racy for radio and a lot of stations edited out that entire verse. That's the quaint little world I lived in.

I see magic in your eyes
I hear the magic in your sighs
Just when I think I'm gonna get away
I hear those words that you always say

I also need to get started on trip planning, which I've been sort of subconsciously putting off for no particular reason I can think of. Travel arrangements to NOTOCON, a long-delayed trip with L. out of the country, another long-delayed trip to Reno to visit my father, next week's visit to Michigan...

And then there's some tech juggling. I think the next Linux installfest is coming up soon, I'll need to check with C. about that. I should consider picking up a bigger hard drive for music files, and a sound card that doesn't hork up.

One of the pick-ups that C. mentioned would probably be a good investment too, since I know I'll want to record some drums before the end of the year. And maybe another general use mic.

That should keep me busy over the summer. It sounds like Ammala isn't doing Fringe, and I haven't heard anything about Festival yet, so I don't know if there'll be anything going on in that area. I should add in a couple of t-shirt designs and some of the web projects I haven't been thinking about, too.
