Doom clones on the Amiga

I wasn't paying that close attention at the time, though to be fair I wasn't paying that close attention to Doom itself. Gloom was the one that I'd read about and seen bits of but never played myself.

After years of dithering, I finally broke down and bought Amiga Forever 2012 Premium Edition this afternoon. The 3-DVD set will take a while to get here but I was able to download an installer for the Plus Edition immediately so I spent the rest of the day messing around with it. The enclosure is obviously larger than that, though it's mostly wider. The drive is screwed to the bottom of the enclosure,there's almost no clearance above it, and not much clearance in front or behind it.

When I removed the defunct internal drive, the external drive disappeared from the drive chain. It turns out that the external drive was unterminated-a label on the back of the enclosure even points that out-so by all rights it should never have worked in the first place. The Amiga 3000's external drive finally quit working a couple hours ago, and appears as "External:NDOS" in Workbench and "Not a DOS Disk" to shell commands. While the hardware (mostly) works, without the software it's essentially useless.

I never did get the full list of modules off of there so without heroic measures or a small miracle it's now ( Read more... )

While I was in college, I ordered a 1GB SCSI hard drive for my Amiga 3000 to augment the 105MB drive that came with it and was perpetually almost-full. The price was fairly reasonable and the seller mentioned that it came in an external enclosure. When it arrived, it turned out to be a 5.25" full-height drive; the enclosure contained its own ( Read more... )
