Edit:  I went ahead with the full format/reinstall, and I plan on setting up the HDD with both XP and Ubuntu, much like devious li'l conjoined twins.  Thanks for your help.  Further comments are appreciated, as I'd still like to know how to solve this, if, God forbid, it happens again.

I'd love to know how to make it so trying to switch users isn't just another way of making me hard reboot my computer.

(attempting to switch users goes to a black screen that does nothing and forces me to cut power to restart the system so I can get back on.)
