OfficeBestFriend (OBF) is leading a project that kicks off next week. By kicking off I mean that the rest of her team will arrive to do work. She personally has been working on this for the last 6 months. I've been helping where I could.
Part of the help was to set-up filing cabinets to store documents that her team will need to use during the project. Each set of documents is labled 1-100 and I've set-up hanging file folders for them with the appropriate labels. Occasionly, one of the document sets will need more than one file - so let's say that document set 50 is so big that it will take 4 files to hold it all. I label the first file 50 and don't label the other 3 files. They are hanging right behind the labeled one. So when you look in the drawer you see file 50 with three behind it then labeled file 51. To me, this seems pretty logical.
So MothMoe,
rember MothMoe? - starts freaking out on me yesterday around 4pm. His current job is to help OBF, by going through the documents and pulling samples for certain areas - not a hard job, I've actually done it myself for a couple of the files. He grabs document set 24 in the morning and discovers that he doesn't have everything that's supposed to be there.
Does he go back to the cabinet to see if he's missed something? Nope.
Does he ask the person who set-up the cabinet and files the document sets where the rest of 24 is? Nope.
Instead, he spends 8 hours sighing, slamming things around in his cube, taking angry coffee breaks, complaining to BMOE about the client, whinging to OBF, and yelling at the client.
Finally he approaches me, and when I go to the cabinet and see that he left the rest of 24 there, I point out to him the filing system. He then goes on a tirade about how a whole day was wasted because I had a non-sensical filing system and that there was no way he could have known or deduced that the rest of document set 24 was in the unlabeled file behind the labeled file.
OK
Perhaps my logical system isn't entirely self-evident to everybody. I'll cop to that without a sneer in my voice.
What I won't cop to is that it's my fault that his whole day was wasted. An intelligent person would have check the cabinet again and/or checked with the person who did the filing immediately after realizing that they were missing documents.
So I'm sorry MothMOE. But YOU wasted the entire day.
