Good morning. This is Arashi's Ohno Satoshi.
Here's today's thought of the day; come on!

"Fashion is, as you get more advanced, subtraction." [1]

[BGM 'Fukkatsu LOVE']

I understand!

This is a quote by the world-famous fashion designer Coco Chanel-san. For example, when writing a sentence, it's not about writing an incredibly long, wordy sentence, but a polished version by an advanced level person would be something short and concise.

'Simple is best'!

This was sent in by listener Nona-san. The message reads:
"Since a while ago, Oh-chan's sleepwear fashion was learnt from Coco Chanel-san, right? Today, how much have you subtracted since then?"

In summer now, I was totally at an advanced level. Quite splendidly so.

(putting on airs) Well, today, I'm sorry but I've not been attentive to the details. Of course I've subtracted stuff as well today.

Since the season's changed, like, when I went out today... Honestly, now I'm in jeans, a t-shirt, a shirt... And my overcoat is a sort of leather-type material leather jacket. Well, it IS leather. (laughs)

Well, so today, since I figured the season's changed, I was thinking I could just do a t-shirt and a jacket, but well, there was the possibility that'd be too cold. So I put on a shirt over that. It's still not subtraction, though. Mm.

But...But! Above that's all perfect. I totally haven't got any accessories at all and naturally, the subtracted item today would be that I'm not wearing any socks. That's subtraction.

It's not because I forgot to wear them. I didn't wear any socks. Like when I was deciding what to wear when I put on my shoes, I thought the balance was off. Mm. So I'm wearing slippers meant for indoor use.

On purpose! On purpose! Mm.

My top is totally winter wear, but just my feet... Um, it's sorta playful. Don't you feel it?

Well, so the subtraction is just for my feet, I guess. Indoor slippers on bare feet.

Uwaa, that's a new one! You'd think that, right? Yeah.

Well, incidentally, today I had a magazine interview as well. I wore an outfit for that, but well, at that time, I thought that as well. At that time, I'd sorta forgotten what I'd worn there. I'd worn a bunch of outfits and changed a few times.

So when I was changing back into my own clothes... Uwaa, that's awful! I hadn't come in sandals or barefoot.

I was still wearing the shoes from the outfit, so I could definitely have gone home just like that. But I was like, no, wait, I didn't wear these here!

These were indoor slippers! How great the felt! But like... Socks! I felt like I'd been wearing socks. Since they were slippers...

They were all fluffy at the soles. So if I'd worn socks, it'd have been super fluffy.

So, um, it'd have been too hot. So I wore these slippers with bare feet. That's how I struck a balance.

In other words - advanced level.

That's all; this was Ohno Satoshi!

[1] This is the literal translation of the Japanese ファッションとは、上級者になるほど引き算である, but the original is actually 'Fashion is made to become unfashionable', as quoted in LIFE magazine (1957). It may have come from the (unsourced) "All you have to do is subtract" which is apparently a fashion rule of thumb according to Coco Chanel.
