It was about 65 degrees today and the robins and cardinals are out full-force (I wish they would discover my feeders, though). Yesterday we played down by the river for a couple of hours, then took a drive in a thunderstorm. Today we went to Uptown to watch classic cartoons and eat breakfast. We got to have the car windows down, which was a treat. It's hard to believe that we were getting 8.5" of snow only five days ago.
I found out last week that I received Honorable Mention for a piece I submitted for a Gesell Award. Honorable Mention feels a bit like going to prom with one's cousin, but it's better than nothing, even if it doesn't come with a cash award. And my prose poetry prof, who I thought hated my work, actually praised one of my pieces quite highly and suggested I should shop it around for publication. The problem is that I'm not sure where to send it. It's more of a short essay than a prose poem; maybe
Brevity would be a good place to start...
I also heard about an opportunity that I think would be fantastic for me; on the pro side, it would mean working with a writer I admire on issues that I feel strongly about and getting a cool title that will look good on the CV. The only downside is that I wouldn't be teaching at all next year, and I'm not sure the nifty title will be enough to outweigh the loss of classroom experience, especially since I'm on fellowship this semester too and would end up only teaching three of my six semesters here.
Nevertheless, I really do want this gig, so any vibes would be appreciated.
I had my crit for the 4 x 5 view camera assignment last week as well. I think it went OK. I'm just glad it's done. I can't believe I only have five more weeks to go until the end of the semester.
The weekend has been somewhat stressful as I struggle to complete a fellowship application that I procrastinated on and has turned out to be more involved than I expected. I may end up having to get IRB approval if I'm going to interview people; I'm wondering if I can postpone that part of the thesis and spend the summer doing less people-oriented research. I'll still have to get the IRB eventually, but maybe this summer can just be about making contacts that will be useful later. Points to ponder.
I also have to get my taxes together, bleh.
But the wee ones will be turning 5 in a couple of days, which is cause for great celebration around here. When
auntof3 was visiting us last week, we stumbled across Futurama on Comedy Central, which rekindled my love for the show, and the kids are now addicted. Most of the adult content goes over their heads--at least I hope so, because I don't want a report from preschool that the words "bite my shiny metal ass" were used--but they love Nibbler and Bender and clamor to watch it constantly. Hee! Now I need to find an .mp3 of the theme song so I can make it my ringtone.
