Changes in our diet

I know I'm probably being weird - but I've really been getting into "natural" foods lately. I don't really care about organic and all that (although I am aware of it and don't mind buying them. I will probably buy more as I learn more about all this stuff!) But I really am into the foods I eat being natural and free from chemical junk. Now I tell my kids, we won't always eat this way but if we try and eat good 95% of the time, then going to McD's or having candy every now and then isn't a big deal. I'm not going to get all weird and never allow candy and only do carob chip cookies and stuff!

Like the other day I was feeding the baby some Arrowroot cookies made by Beechnut, and I was reading the ingredients. They have High Fructose Corn Syrup in them. I found these Pooh Bear animal cookies at Costco that are organic, but sweetened with cane sugar. I also have been buying organic yogurt because they are sweetened and colored naturally with vegetable dye and sugar instead of chemical crap. I really haven't cared about this in the past but I'm starting to care more. I couldn't believe our bread had High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) and I couldn't find any flour tortillas without loads of junk in them. My MIL only eats corn tortillas and I know why now - they only have corn, oil, water, salt in them. (Usually - some have preservatives.) I'm still concerned about fat and calories but I'm more concerned about the amount of junk.

We have a long way to go. I still drink Diet Coke. I noticed our jelly has HFCS and our peanut butter has sugar and added oil. I have bought the natural PB in the past, so I'll start again. We're working on it, slow and steady. My daughter has been interested too and found some baked Kettle Chips that were all natural so I bought them for her. Sometimes things are more expensive. But other things it will be cheaper because I might make my own refried beans, or oatmeal (instead of instant) or baking cookies instead of buying them. Anyway - just my little essay on what we've been doing. I figure if you are always trying to be better, it's a good thing. I never want to be perfect, just always improving!
