Aug 12, 2009 21:21

Found this one while going through my flashdrive today and decided to go ahead and post it.

Fandom/: Fullmetal Alchemist
Characters/: Roy Mustang
Pairings/: Hints of Roy/Ed, but could be seen as friendship too.
Rating/: K
Disclaimer/: If I owned Fullmetal Alchemist, THE ENDING WOULD NOT HAVE LEFT ME IN TEARS! -Sobs-
Summary/: Roy doesn't take orders, but Alphonse does. Post-movie.
Warnings/: Spoilers for end of Fullmetal Alchemist The Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa.
Author's Notes/: The movie was so beautiful and sad and I love it and hate it all at once! ... And then they played the ending credits song, and this came into my head. I wanted to continue it but it just feels done.

-Pushes Ed and Roy together and hugs Al, sniffling-

"I just got you back!"

The words echo through my mind. Subconsciously, I find myself squeezing Alphonse tighter as I try to keep myself quiet. I just got you back! I agree silently.

I watch him move slowly into the ship, eyes staring straight ahead as he keeps his shoulders tense. Unfortunately I know him too well, even now. I read through his body language easily, and in a moment I've made my decision.

I squeeze Alphonse again, leaning forward to whisper in his ear. "On my signal, hide. I'll take care of the gate on this side. Go be with your brother."

He peers up at me, his face bewildered as a few more tears slip down his cheeks. "Sir? What are you - "

"Be with your brother, Alphonse," I repeat, even as my chest aches. "He needs *someone* around to get him out of trouble."

A light enters the boy's eyes, and slowly he begins to nod. "Yes, Sir. I understand."

I look away, watching the ship intently. Privately, I hope Alphonse is not as good at reading me as his brother. Edward and I had once made a science of reading the things that went unsaid between us.

I see the moment, and move to throw Alphonse across the widening gap before it's too late. "Now!" I snarl, hurling him with all my strength.

He lands safely, but turns to me rather than running inside. His face is serious, but there is pain in his eyes. "Thank you, Sir. For everything." He hesitates, then adds "He really does like you, Sir. I'm sure of it."

"I know, Alphonse," I answer quietly, not caring if he can hear me over the wind or not. If nothing else, I've learned enough about Edward Elric to know how he shows that he cares about something. Just as I know that he reads me just as well.

I only regret that I was never able to tell him face to face.

This is the best I can give you, Edward. I may never be able to tell you the things I want to say, but I can give you this one gift. I can give you the one thing you must never lose.

I wait to see him sneak inside before I try to find a way to the ground. Enough material ... Idiot. As if I needed nearly so much.

As if you could really have expected me to simply comply with your 'commands'.

I look up when I reach the ground despite my resolve not to, watching silently as the ship disappears. "Goodbye, Edward. Goodbye, Alphonse," I say softly, lifting a hand.

Goodbye ...

My chest aches.
