happy labor day to my fellow americans! from those swell folks who brought you the weekend. :D i hope you all got a chance to rest from your labors and that the non americans in the audience had non stressful mondays.
(i went to the grocery store and indulged in a moment of irony that there are always going to be people laboring on labor day and i had another moment to hope they were all at least getting holiday pay. after that was a three hour zoom with my sister and the mothership and then i departed for the diesel cafe to sit by the window and have a late afternoon breakfast sandwich and read one of the submissions for writing group.)
on saturday my sister and i went up to newburyport which is on the water because a. it was such a nice day, and b. it's a thing we do on long weekends in the summer. we window shopped and bought candy and i acquired a coat. there's a store my sister really likes and everytime we go in she walks out with something only this time i guess it was my turn. it's a nice coat and it's been a long time since i bought any outerwear. we had dinner at a place near me and sat outside and i had a salmon burger and a gin cocktail and it was just a very nice and very chill day.
and yesterday we went to ikea so my sister could pick up a desk and dither about tv consoles and dither about bookcases and storage units and get some lamps and we did not stop for meatballs because we had shit to do. by which i mean we had to build the desk. i love diy furniture so this was not a hardship for me. except! we built it in the guest room, because it's going in the guest room, and the guest room is small and diy furniture takes up a lot of space while it's being built and i was maneuvering around the pieces of desk and lost my balance and fell on a screw sticking out of the underside of the desk. >.< the flat end, not the pointy end - if you've never built ikea furniture they use these screws that go in halfway and then you slide another piece of wood on top of the screw and kind of, uh, screw it into place and that's one of the ways you hold a corner together in a piece of furniture. and that's what i fell on. it punched a hole in my shorts and then punched a hole in me. in my ass. >.< i peeled off the shorts and mourned their destruction and my sister bandaged me up and we worked on the desk until it was time to go to dinner at which point i very gingerly put on nice pants and changed my shirt and we sat outside at the restaurant and had aperol spritzes and ate delicious food and after a while i realized i was still bleeding (yes, through the bandaid) so i sat on my napkin so as not to make it worse. i also told the hostess because what if they notice i'm stealing a napkin? and she went "we have bandaids if you want a new one! do you want another napkin?" she was very solicitous. we stopped at cvs on the way home so my sister could get more big bandaids and once back at her house i peeled off my nice pants and tried to rinse them out in the sink and my sister applied a new bandaid and we finished the desk. and then it was almost eleven and i was still kind of bleeding so i got a third bandaid (plus an alcohol wipe, ow) and my sister because she loves me and i was getting nervous because why was i still bleeding after five hours! gave me a clean pair of shorts and drove me to the er. where i was eventually seen by a doctor who squirted some coagulating gel in the wound and packed it with gauze or something and padded it with a giant wodge of even more gauze held down by like five feet of tape. which was exactly what i wanted. i mean, i knew i didn't need stitches and my sister knew i didn't need stitches (it was apparently a small hole and a clean wound) and i'm up to date on my tetanus shots and all i wanted was for a medical professional to make sure i wasn't going to bleed on a. another pair of shorts, b. a car seat, c. my couch gasp!, or d. my pajama bottoms. and the er doc did just that.
i felt much better on the way home even tho there's a giant wodge of gauze on my ass (just under the right buttcheek) which makes sitting kind of awkward. but i'm not bleeding on anything! i just have a hole in my ass. :| tomorrow i can take the gauze off and apply a smaller less 3d bandage. and i'm fine! just a klutz.
it was an adventure that's for sure. on the plus side, the desk looks great. and dinner was yummy. and tomorrow i'm back to work where i may or may not share the fact that i basically sat on a screw and punctured my butt. (also the blood came out of my nice pants which is a very important detail. but i still destroyed a pair of shorts i really liked. sigh.)
