yesterday was the solstice so now the days get longer! (at least in the northern hemisphere. my depeest sympathies to southern hemispherians and their longer nights.) the shortest night in the longest year EVER.
my car is still kind of snowed in the driveway so i had to cab it to physical therapy today. but i went! in person! and the physical therapist even unwrapped the gauze around my ankle, so i felt FRESH AIR ON MY FOOT for the first time in like a month and a half. omg. holy shit is my skin dry tho.. also, you know, she massaged my ankle and prodded my foot and manipulated it and i did exercises and it was very productive. aside from turning a recommendation letter into a pdf with signature for one of my pi's, it was the most productive thing i did all day. i expect tomorrow to be just as slow, and then i'm off for the rest of the year. woot. :D
i could've spent at least some of my free time working on the holiday project for writing group.... the same scene/event from three different pov's, or in three different styles. i know what i'm going to do, i just have to do it.
i finished peaky blinders and am annoyed at the way it ended on a cliffhanger. >.< when's the next season?? i liked it, tho. i liked the continuity between seasons. and the relationship between tommy and alfie solomons was intriguing and curious - alfie betrayed tommy, what, three times? including getting his brother arrested? and yet tommy kept going to him for one reason or other, and alfie told luca changretta tommy was his very good friend, and he wrote to him after they shot each other (altho ok alfie was probably off his face on painkillers), and tommy took care of his dog, and they seemed to have some kind of understanding. (also alfie asking tommy to find someone to look after his dog, because otherwise the dog would be despondent at alfie's imminent death, seemed like a very tom hardy thing to say.) i'm not 100% sure i buy tom hardy as a nice jewish boy gangster, but i certainly did enjoy watching him.
have i mentioned the scottish gritters before? i feel like i have.
they have such fun names. also i love that they're called "gritters". i mean, around here they're just salt trucks.
those of you who have stockings to stuff for chocolate lovers, might i suggest
tiny jars of nutella? not that you actually need a reason to introduce tiny jars of nutella into your (or anyone else's) life....
yesterday was the
great conjunction, in which jupiter and saturn were the closest they've been in the last 400 years. and the last time this happened at night? almost eight centuries ago.
have some pictures. (it was too cloudy here to see.) if the night sky is clear where you are i'm pretty sure you can still see planets in conjunction.
dumpster fire cookie cutters. so 2020.
relatedly, there's a thread of holiday cookies in r/baking, and someone made a
gingerbread dumpster on fire.
also relatedly, sort of, the university of kansas school of law has put out the first (and probably only) issue of the
kansas journal of confections & winter pastries, with an article about... pecan pie. specifically crust burn and filling ooze. there are footnotes. scholarly legal type footnotes, even.
