today i had to take notes at a department meeting in another building first thing, so i get off the t and start trekking over there and hear someone calling my name, and it's one of my friends from old job! the archivist! (how coincidental, now that i'm working for a library. :D ) she just had a baby (who is SO CUTE and coincidentally wearing a library of congress t-shirt), so she's wearing the new kid on her chest and pushing the older kid in a stroller - he's like three or four - she was taking him to day care when she saw me. surprise! so we chat for like five minutes and i tell her where i'm working - and that i am working - and she tells me that she's moving to chicago! she's just transferring from the boston office to the home office, and her hubs is also transferring (he works for google), and they're moving the beginning of november so we have slightly over a month to meet for lunch. O.O but how random! and fun!
the rest of the day was a day. not bad. yesterday was also a day - not bad - i got visitor parking passes for a couple weeks from now and possibly something else i don't remember. because i'm a temp i don't automatically get access to everything that full-time employees get, but so far folks have been really good about getting me into things. seriously - everyone's really helpful. it's nice to be able to get help when you need it.
sunday there was an entirely random street fair down the street from me, i think to encourage patronage of local businesses while the bridge is out. there weren't a lot of people out, but i ran into
farwing of all people, and got to meet her new roommate and landlady. the vegan taco place had a food truck out selling vegan frito pie, which was intriguing altho i'm highly suspicious of vegan dairy. farwing got one and apparently it was delicious. i also randomly met one of farwing's friends, who was out in a dress you could color in. like, it was basically a wearable coloring book. it had a tiered victorian type skirt, and under some of the tiers were pockets for the markers. (she'd made the dress herself.) kids would walk by and she'd go "hey, do you want to color me in?" and flip up one of the tiers of her skirt to show the markers. it was really cool, and mostly i got to hang out with some very random people at a very random street fair for a bit.
my rbb is now 13k and all i want to write is smut. >.< maybe because my bigbang was gen and the plot bunnies miss the smut? i don't know. it still doesn't have a title.
saturday was free museum day so i went to the
mary baker eddy library because i wanted to see the
mapparium, which is a giant stained-glass globe from 1935 and is immensely cool. (altho if you drop something over the walkway into antarctica you won't get it back.) you can't take pictures, which is kind of a bummer, but you get to see what the world's boundaries looked like and how much of africa and southeast asia had been colonized by europe, and it's amazing how much has changed. i mean, israel was still palestine and the soviet union was this undifferentiated mass of land and korea was all one country and a whole bunch of places didn't even exist.
and then i went into the christian science mother church, because it's right there and it's free and i'm a sucker for ecclesiastical architecture. the architect was influenced by the
hagia sophia in istanbul, so it's got a MASSIVE dome. you get to see the old mother church on the tour too - they built the big one because christian science EXPLODED and suddenly they needed to be able to seat 5000 people on sundays - it's entirely different in scale and style and i think i liked it better. it was a gorgeous day and good to be out, and let's be honest, free museum tickets are always a good excuse to get out of the house.
i watched the premiere of this is us, which is the same as it ever was, if frustratingly disjointed up until like the last five minutes,
and i guess the singing blind guy is supposed to be kate and toby's kid, but not a single thing about his scenes looked like even a year into the future, so i had a hard time buying him as a future pearson, and i watched the pilot of emergence, altho i missed first few minutes because this is us ran over because i guess that's a thing tv shows do now. there's conspiracy shit and i'm intrigued. and i think it's set on long island? where i used to live. i like that allison tolman is an average-sized white woman and not a skinny starlet, and it has clancy brown! who i really like.
curling season starts on sunday. O.O i'm not emotionally prepared.
