in my house shrimps are more important than duty

oh my flist, i saw the worst movie last night. (midnight movies at the indie theater near my sister's house.) i don't know what i was expecting but whatever it was, it's not what i got. it's called liquid sky, it was made in new york in 1982, and it's about tiny invisible aliens who come to earth because they feed off the high people get from shooting heroin, until they discover that the high people get from orgasm is even better. it's mostly about the woman (margaret) whose roof the aliens land on, who will have (usually coerced) sex with a guy and then watch him a. die by a glass shard in the skull, and b. vanish. the acting is terrible, the dialogue is terrible, the effects are terrible (and were probably terrible in 1982), the soundtrack is terrible, the editing choices are utterly bizarre. the first sex scene is a rape (the guy gets his, at least) and pretty much all the sex after that is the guy coercing margaret in some way, but all the guys end up dead because tiny aliens find their orgasms delicious. the punk hair and makeup and clothes are, uh, well, probably avant-garde for the time. margaret's girlfriend at least has cool boots. the best i can say about it is that there are some interesting stabs at queerness and androgyny - the actress who plays margaret also plays margaret's foil, a guy named jimmy who is predictably terrible as a person, altho i think the actress did a reasonable job playing him.

after the movie was over, during the closing credits, a guy sitting a few rows in front of me got up with "well that was awful" and i couldn't disagree. as i was walking back to my car i heard someone tell whoever he was with that it was an aids allegory, and while i guess it's possible to read it that way, i'd be very surprised if it was at all on purpose. all the sex is very het, even tho margaret isn't (the men are all presumably straight), and i think 1982 was too early for aids allegory movies.

oh wait, there is a sex rape scene between margaret and her girlfriend, ending with - surprise - the girlfriend disappearing to become dinner for tiny invisible aliens.

in addition to the storyline with margaret (who's a model) and her girlfriend (who's a performer) and the coercive sex and the tiny aliens, there's a german guy who's in new york researching the aliens and who ends up in the apartment of a woman who i think is supposed to be jimmy's mother, who responds to the guy telling her he's from west berlin with "i'm jewish" (that cracked up the audience) (we'd just seen her order chinese takeout composed entirely of shrimp dishes), and some entirely random couple, the guy half of which is a heroin addict and the girl half of which wants him to stop. margaret's girlfriend is a dealer, i guess that's the connection. did i mention it's not a very coherent movie? because it's not. the actress who plays margaret (and who cowrote the script) wrote a novel based on the movie later in the 80s, about which i am super curious - does it make more sense than the movie? is it any better? - but i'm sure it's been out of print for like thirty years, so i'll just have to be curious.

before the movie we got a legitimately vintage trailer for point break - like, 35mm film, scratches and all - because the theater is having a keanu-thon next sunday, from midnight until noon. point break is first movie and speed is the last, and all the ones in between are a secret.

the other thing of note that i did yesterday was drive a bit over an hour south of boston to (theoretically) see chaneen, whose parents have a house there, and who was (theoretically) going to be in greater boston this weekend. except i got down there to discover no one at the house, because... i completely misread the date and chaneen is coming NEXT WEEKEND AND NOT THIS ONE. >.< at least it was a nice day for a drive, and now i know how far it is. but still. oy, self.

yesterday was also the anniversary of skinny steve rogers getting the supersoldier serum and turning into chris evans. look, it's a milestone. that chest deserves to be celebrated.

today i met friends for brunch, bought shoes for my cousin's kid's wedding in two weeks, and finished editing my bigbang! changed some things, tried to tighten it up. oooh. so exciting. is anyone up for a quick spag beta? i post on thursday so i'm not expecting a thorough critique, i just need someone else to read it and point out any spelling or punctuation errors, or any inconsistencies. it's a bit over 28k, completely gen, and it's set in space. :D

friday was so quiet at work i was ready to go home after lunch. >.< i did not. but i was sorely tempted. friday was also the solstice, and it was rainy and cloudy here so i didn't even get a chance to bask in the longest day before they start getting shorter. hmph, mother nature, hmph.

the old state house still has its rainbow on for pride.

this is kind of old news now, but some christian group got up in arms about good omens and petitioned netflix to cancel it. which is only newsworthy because it's on amazon prime. netflix and amazon had some fun trolling.

spacebang, movie review, wtf, sometimes i'm kind of an idiot, boston, new job second floor, fun with friends, captain america, well that's just stupid, pride, weekend wrapup
